What are the questions?

Just be as honest as you can...They are not testing you to try and catch you out...They are just looking at how they can help you.

Good luck

(((hugs)))

it will just be standard procedure, dont worry just because you have recieved some thing in the post this does not mean there going to turn you away its just normal procedure to gain info they need so they can help you x

I passed my psysch appointment. All my friend were amazed as they all think i'm crazy :silly: :rotflmao: :Na_Na_Na_Na: :giggle:

The best way to deal with this is to be honest, this is not a test to outwit you, it's there because if you do have any underlying problems with emotional eating, it is best sorted out prior to the operation, to ensure you get the best and most successful results.

I am now receiving long overdue help with some of my issues, which were picked up during my psych evaluation.

Hi Mandy. DON'T PANIC!!!! These forms are sent as routine. Just answer them as truthfully as you can. If they are the same ones I got from St Richards, see if you can spot the typing mistakes like I did. I also corrected the typing mistakes before I sent them back so they probably have me marked down as 'picky'!!! They will look at your answers and decide from them whether you need to see a psychotherapist or not. THEY ARE NOT GONNA SAY NO - it just might mean an extra appointment to have a chat with someone about how you feel about yourself etc, but there really is nothing to worry about. OK.

Although you might not agree with me right now, but your panic about seeing a psychologist is really quite normal. It also shows you care about what is happening to you and it is a normal experiance. Most people are nervous about seeing a pschologist for many different reasons. Sometimes they don't really understand what to expect and other times it is because they don't want to be labelled as 'crazy'. Whatever the reasons for your panic I will try and tell you what happened at my appointment and the reasoning behind what they are asking you.

From what I gathered from my meeting, and my understanding of psychology, it is basically to assess your fitness for surgery.

This can be grouped into 3 main categories:

1) Your general mental health. For example do you have a mental health problem which might need addressing prior to surgery. This could come in many forms, such as pre-existing conditions such as depression, bipolar, anxiety disorder...

2) Your mental health surrounding food and/or body image. For example do you have or have had problems such as anorexia, bulimia, binge eating or body dysmorphic disorder which may effect both short term and long term recovery.

3) Realistic expectations. Do you fully comprehend what you are about to do. Do you understand REALISTICALLY what can be achieved from surgery. For example do you understand that you can actually gain wait post-op; do you know about the likely development of unsightly loose skin; do you understand that despite your body changing your mental state and problems you have now will not be cured; do you know that WLS is not a miracle cure; do you have an understanding of what your life will be like post-op - and how both your relationship with food and your personal relationships will change.

As I understand it, both criteria 1 and 2 can be dealt with at the session and future sessions; however, as far as I am aware it is criteria 3 which could possibly prevent you from getting a recommendation from the psychologist. And don't get me wrong your surgeon can override their conclusions if they feel it is necessary. However, the psychologists evaluation is not only a tool for your surgeon to base his decision on, it is a tool for you to try and advance your own understanding of yourself and what you are about to go through.

This surgery, although physical in nature, will undeniably have an impact on your continuing mental health. Your attitudes, addictions, body image, confidence, and all round mental health and well-being will change. A psychologists appointment will not only help you prepare yourself for this major change, but it will help you to develop and further your sense of self-awareness.

I hope this helps!

I haven't had one of these forms yet but I'm sure it's nothing to worry about!! Just be honest as there is a reason for the forms I guess!!! Good luck!!!

Oh and if in doubt, photocopy the form so you can make a rough draft!! You can always check and correct your answers then!!!

Hi Mandy, I know I went private - but when my Consultant (Dr. Sigurdson) saw a letter from my psychiatrist saying I had severe bipolar, he simply told me that he sees a fair few people in my position because of our medication.

O/T this is why I always feel sorry for Kerry Katona being criticised about her weight - she is on a small amount of (one of)the meds that I'm on. Neuroleptic meds are notorious for weight gain - due to increased hunger and slowed metabolism.

Anyway, back to you Mandy, don't worry - as the others have said - they are simply finding out how to help you. I would think that an awful lot of us who are overweight get anxious and depressed because of all of the stress involved in being fat.

Best wishes to you ( and sorry for going O/T!)

Jen
