I really need some advice from you people who know what i am going through. Iv been deliberating wls for about 2 weeks although in the back of my mind I really did not want the surgery, I really wanted to lose weight naturally! After all other people do it! anyway I was doing ok until i had an allergic reaction to the amphetemines i was taking. I ended up in hospital! I went to the gp who prescribed reductil to me. I thought "yes, great another chance!"I began taking them when my reaction had gone however after taking 2 tablets, the allergic reaction returned very extreme! I now know i am unable to take medication to lose weight. I am absolutely gutted, depressed etc! I tried to eat sensibly today but I am absolutely starving. What is the answer??? I know its me who needs to make the decision but could sure do with your advice please. Im feeling very desperarte x julie, Thanx to everyone for listening, sorry to moan

id say def go back to your gp as there other meds available although no body should have given you anfetamines. reductil doesnt contain them but doesnt suit everyone. orlistat is another thing worth trying and i also ask to go to a weight management clinic and to see a dietician . although it wasnt for me possibly something like lighterlife may also be worth a try.

Hi Julie, have you been dieting for long, are you very overweight? I'm sorry that the weightloss tablets did not work out and as Serenity says there is still the option of Orlistat open to you. This is not amphetamine based - it basically stops you from absorbing about a 3rd of the fat you eat. Because the side effects are pretty grusome it is sort of expected that your eating habits will become healthier.

If you fall under Gwent Healthcare, there is a specialist weight management clinic based in Nantyglo. I think that it is still the only one in Wales. They are very good and have nurses, psychologist, Doctor and Dietician. They have been a good support to me and continue to be so since I have had the band - even though I had to have it done privately as Wales provides so few WLS. Not many GPs know of the Weight management clinic but you need to be referred to Dr. Haboubi ( yes it is pronounced Ha booby!) and I think the GP needs to refer you via Neville Hall in Abergavenny. Dr H. is very good. Totally eccentric and kind but also very straight with people.
If you don't come under Gwent Healthcare I would try to be referred anyway and find out whether there is anything like that available to you. (There wasn't when I started going there but that was a year ago now).
As for WLS, don't rush into anything if you have only been thinking about it for a short while. Try and get as much info as you possibly can - you will get a lot here- then at a GP appt discuss every avenue open to you. That is my advice, if you have anything else to ask re. WLS in Wales, please just ask.

Hi Julie
A locum doctor was covering at my surgery and he perscribed reductil,i got a later a few days after from my surgery saying to come off them as they wont perscribe them for their patients.
So i never really got to see if they worked, but the other avenue to look down for help towards losing weight is the gastric balloon,it doesnt suit everyone but it maybe a aid towards WLS as it has been in my case.
You dont say what weight and height you are so maybe you dont need to loose to much and you are being too hard on yourself.
Personally i would go back to the doctors and ask if you could be refered to see a biatric surgeon, its worth a try.
I know different pct have different criteria you have to meet eg bmi and high blood pressure etc,you may find it on one of the threads,if not i am sure someone will put a link on for you ;).

People on here are so friendly and we all have our own reasons and experiences for doing what we do.Dont feel desperate, think of what you can achieve with a little help.

Take care

Hi Julie, I've been there and like you could not take the meds because they upset my other meds. I've done the diet clubs and fad diets and not achieved keeping my weight off. I did'nt want surgery either but it gets to the point when you realise nothing else is going to work. Now I'm waiting for my op on 1st may and keep reminding myself that the pain of the op has got to be worth it and not half as painful as the life time of dieting. I hope you get all the advice you need on here and find the journey you want to take.Good luck xx Gaynor xx

Hi
Firstly everyone on here knows how you are feeling and we have all been there or are still there

For me the decision for WLS came out of a realisation that I was not going to lose this weight on my own after so many failed diets - I had sort of come through the desperate stage and was quite clam really - I had stopped beating myself up, taken accountability for my eating problem and had come to the decision that I had an eating problem which i needed help for and I wasnt able mentally to do it by dieting so I went down the WLS route. I stopped wishing why I couldnt do it like the people on the cover of weight watchers magazine and took control of my life for probably the first time ever.

Dont get me wrong I wish I hadnt got myself to the point of needing WLS but I have and that part of my life is finished with and no amount of punishing myself will help. Time to love myself - man !

I think you need to research and research the WLS find out if you meet YOUR PCT criteria or can afford it privately, decide if you have the will to turn your life over to this new life and use your weight loss 'tool' to help you to change your life and be committed to it, or decide if you are not ready for this yet and research other diets and therapies to give a go.

It is a hard place you are at but only you can truly decide what to do and I did that by huge amounts of research and made an informed decision for me emotionally and physically

Good luck and I wish you well xx

In my opinion if your unsure about surgery in any way then DON'T do it. It's not an easy journey to take and can have consiquenses. If you go for surgery you need to be prepared for it mentally.
