potassium levels - can this affect surgery

Hi all,

I haven't been feeling too well at all lately with muscles spasms, cramps, palpitations, dizziness, fainting and HP. I wanted to make sure everything was ok for surgery so I ask my DR to do some blood works. Apprently something is low but they aren't concerned therefore they won't tell me what is low, but what they have told me is that my potassium levels are very low and they are concerned. They want me to take another test next week to see if any changes.

Can low potassium levels affect my op ???

Have you asked your doctor if it will affect it?? and eat bananas they full ov the stuff hun xx

I could only see the nurse and she doesn't know. Thanks for the tip. I will txt you back now my phone has battery lol x

ok just sent you another text hun no rush x

Also jelly sweets are high in potassium x

they might just give you potassium before ya op...... mine was low according to nurse but consultant said it was fine so x

at pre op today they took a blood sample to check potassium levels so i'd say make sure you get chomping on bananas just to be on the safe side, i feel fine so i didn't think to ask what would happen if levels were low...

Thanks Rachael think I better ring them tomo and ask, got some banana from asda today wa thinking of making a smoothie with my milk x

I was put on a potassium drip a few days after my surgery...surgeon said my potassium was low before operation but I was told this afterwards. It did not stop my surgery so hopefully you will be fine.

For years I have had terrible problems, all that come from having low potassium but not one dr picked up on it. I have been on potassium tablets or liquid since my surgery in June. Have to go for regular blood tests as it goes up but then back down. If it was not for the bypass I would probably still be none the wiser to why I felt so bad.

I think I'm the same as u I took a blood test as I was losing to much blood when I was having my periods I've since found out my body goes into shock at the time of the month and some of my levels drop low. I took the test on my period my potassium was low two weeks later it was back up. Same again period week goes down then after it goes up. In worried as I have my period the week of surgery. X
