Pre op diets etc

elffie01

Im Meellttinngg!! :)
Im just starting to get a bit worried but nothing overly bad.
I have my first appt on the 30th July  with my surgeon or one of his team im not sure. This takes 5 weeks out of the equation to begin with

My worry is that they have to have done the op by the 19th Oct due to the 18 week pathway from the PCT.
The letter I got confirming the appointment with Mr Pollard states on it ' we anticipate you wil be offered a provisional treatment date following your consultation and this could be short notice.'

Im starting to get concerned that time is limited and that I have to have a pre op diet, pre op checks, bloods, and probably tons of other stuff.
I dont want to delay anything and I keep hearing the 5% weight loss being mentioned a lot lately. Is this the norm for all the surgeons? If so should I be trying right now? Ive kind of just given up on the dieting issue atm as I have hundreds of other stuff whizzing in this tiny brain of mine. :(

Hiya Elfie... I am due to have my operation on 29th September, I am having a band, but i have started to diet now, not the pre op one at the moment as they told me not to do that till end of august, so i am just doing slimfast at the moment. I guess it wouldnt hurt starting it now but i am sure someone will come along soon whose been in this situation to give you more advice. good luck to you X

Any weight you can loose before the surgery is a bonus as it decreases the chance of complications. It is not the policy of all surgeons that you loose 5% body weight, mine did not care he said as long as I did his preop diet that is fine, so im on that now in total for 2 weeks but there are some people who accept cancellations and so are in for surgery very quickly, these people are put on the preop diet (whichever recommended by your team) or the milk diet as soon as possible. Also dont worry about the preop stuff, it can be all done pretty much in a day. I know at salford I had my preop and was there a few hours and they did bloods, urine, ECG, breathing tests etc. I know all PCTs and Hospitals are different but dont worry as they know what they are doing and you wont be the first person to be going through it!!!! Good luck at your appointment!!!!!

Elffie, 5% is not the norm by any means. They won't expect any weight loss between referral and consultation, and they don't have a set minimum for during the pre-op diet. Some surgeons only do the pre-op diet for a week, so don't fret the time frame, as in theory it can all be done very quickly (look at the private sector!). Bloods and ECGs etc don't take long, so there isn't a whole lot to do.

Deep breaths, you'll be fine.

thanks. I know I'm not the first to go through the worry but had to spout it or I'd be bald by the end of the day lol :sigh:

I think my patience has gone lol. Only a week to go and things are whizzing in my mind, god help me when I get a date !

Im glad to hear about the 5% that was the main bit that was worrying me more. At the moment I have just started on Celebrity Slim, this week. I have been on it before and lost about a stone, but as normal it goes back on. It tastes nicer than slimfast and CD etc lol. So ill stick to that till my appointment. i've also done a food diary for 2 weeks, when I remember to fill it in. just incase they want that and it doesnt delay anything lol.

Think Ill buy a hospital bed too just incase they dont have room, I can wheel mine into a cupboard and then they have no excuse :rotflmao:

HAHAHAHA!!! Glad your feeling a bit better about it now. Dont worry it will all fall into place!!!

Maybe you should consider applying to medical school in case they run out of surgeons, and start wearing the TEDS stockings now, and well actually it might be worth setting off soon so you're not late :) ;)

Relax, everything will be fine, concentrate on the emotional preparation instead of trying to cover all bases (you'll soon realise it's impossible). Try and start listening to your stomach and learning how to tell when you're full, and get in to the good habits of drinking plenty of fluids and not drinking with meals.

You'll be fine :hug99:

LOL Med school Shell your a star, hmm I got a DIY book , maybe that might have something in it.

I know Im fretting over nothing and it will all fall into place next week. But I needed to spout or I would have imploded and believe me no one wants that to happen.:D

I've taken to writing down some jobs I need to do and now Im off to blitz the kids wardrobes and put them out for collection tomorrow, the kids clothes that is not the kids...although....

Spout away, that's what we're all here for ;)

now then, now then!! lol!! (doesn't sound right coming out of my gob as i'm a southerner!!) but anyways, Mr Pollard is a lovely guy, very professional and very laid back, he'll put you at your ease straight away....with me, he hasn't told me i have to lose any percentage of my start weight but has given me an information book regarding his surgery and both pre and post-op advice, the liver reducing diet is 10 days pre-op and is also in the booklet, if you want a copy early doors, mail me at [email protected] and i'll send my scanned copy over to you to let you peruse at your leisure, oh btw, when i saw him, he got his diary out and gave me a date there and then!!

Nice one Marky thanks for that info, makes me feel loads better> dont worry about the booklet I will wait.
I think its the unknown more than anything tbh. Once Ive been Ill be ok.
