Psychological Assessment

Hi all,

A quick question for all Bypassers here. Did you have a psych evaluation as a matter of course or were you allowed to have the surgery without one?

When I saw the weight management consultant Dr New, he recommended this along with a dietician and the surgeon. Have to say it never happened I just saw the surgeon...xx

Thanks girls for the quick replies. I ask this question because I spoke to my surgeon's secretary yesterday to try and see when I'm likely to have an appointment with him and when a surgery date might be etc. Unfortunately she couldn't answer any of my questions but thought I was very close to surgery with the only likely hold up being the psych evaluation. Appointments for this seem to take a long time to get. So I was left wondering if there is ever a case where a surgeon would decide an evaluation is not necessary. I would be happy to hear from Mr. Ammori's people.

Thanks Charliegirl. I was just typing my last post when you posted. I feel I don't need a psych evaluation and hope the good surgeon thinks so too.

I was required due to the Salford 'pathway' to have a psych eval as were many who had their surgery at Salford Royal. I saw a very nice lady who asked questions about my self-image, my expectations post-surgery and my support system for after. My husband sat in with me, the appointment only took about a half-hour and was pleasant. She asked about my childhood and how I felt about being fat.

It really was no big deal so if you have to go, don't sweat it.

Nic;)

I am on the salford pathway and have been told i will have to have one.

Hi,

I'm with Mr. Khan at Walsall Manor, NHS funded for bypass.

I am to see the pysche and this appointment came through before my funding had been approved. I was told that at our hospital, the psyche has a long waiting list and many patients don't see him until after the op. At WM, having the psyche appointment does not affect the op process, I obviously don't know if that is the same at your hospital.

The nurse told me that the psyche will make sure I am coping with the process mentally and help me with any issues I may have.

But I know not everyone sees the psyche. I have assumed that I am seeing him because I have a history of depression and am currently on medication for it.

I have my first pre-op assessment a few days before so I will double-check on the whys and wherefores of it then, I think.

Best of luck for your journey.

Thanks again for the replies good people. I'm not so much worried about the assessment itself, just the delay having it before surgery might create. I just want to get on with the op now and get on with life and living post op.

Although mine was private i had a mullti answer questionaire to answer which passed as my phsy assessment, and was told at the consultation based on my answers i did not need to see a phycologist

Hi Plus
i have my surgery with mr ammori 23.01.08 at the alex and didnt have to see a phsy in fact it was never even mentioned...
xx

I have'nt had one...wonder if I will though, cuz I do have issues and am a complete nut job!

plus give the hospital a ring and ask to be put through to the clinical psycology department. The appointments dont come out through the main hospital and ask them what the waiting time is like. The one i saw was called carly smith and she was really nice. I was told that there had to be 3 specialist that approved you for surgery and she had no doubt that i was suitable.

Mr Ammori offered me an assessment, but based on the quick questionnaire they give you to determine if you need one, he decided I didn't need one. Its not compulsory unless you are so many points in the quick questionnaire. Fingers crossed you will not need one. Take Care R x
