Psychological Profiling 4 Bypassers and Banders Please

After reading Fedups hate shopping post...It does seem to me that there was very little psychological support prior to her her surgery.

I am confused as to the fine line of psychological profiling that befits a Bypasser or a Bander.

Can we list them here please?

Eg: Volumn eater = Bander

I think would be so very helpful to those making up their mind if one or the other is right for them...

psych

hi i had my op on 19th jan 09 but for nearly twelve months before i had to attend a psychological assesment, one to asses my suitability for surgury and secondly to prepare me for my future after my op and the changes that will come, it was also strongly recomended that i attend a support group before and after surgery which if i am honest i have found invaluable

i was never asked to have this done pre or post op i do think it would have been handy post op the type of op i had was my choice they recommended one because of eating habbits but it wasnt for me so i had the other and its working well i think it should be ofered to everyone tho

I am a bander and had the proceedure to help me cop with volume or binge eating. I do like sweet things too but decided I did not want to radically alter my physiology or have a proceedure that would mean I would mean I would be affected by malabsorption.

My op was on NHS and I receceived 1 counselling session before and 2 after and I am now awaiting (7 months down the line) for more long term counselling, not only to help me with the surgery and its after effects but also to help me with some issues that lead me to comfort binge eat. This on the NHS is limited so I am in for a long wait.

But I know when the help comes I am going to grab the chance with both hands.

psych evaluation

hi i know i have just posted but your post has got me thinking about my psych evaluation, the chap that dealt with me was really nice and it was all very laid back he told me that for nhs surgury ihad to have approval from the endocrinologist the surgeon and himsef he said that he would ask a series of basic questions about my home life my eating habits etc.once he said that i was a suitable candidate for surgury he let slip that if i had said that i sit and eat meals or snacks in front of the tv he would have recomended refusal as that is a big no no

I didnt see any one before of after my op and It was never mentioned by the Dr, mine or at the hospital

I was at the same hospital as Teen and was very fortunate to have been referred to the Bariatric psychologist. I saw him 5 days before my op and he admitted during the session that he does have the authority to pull the plug.

I think *all* bariatric patients should see a bariatric psychologist, because, and this is only my opinion, I do fear that many people go onto WLS very ill informed and ill prepared for what it entails and thus can struggle with it all.

As an NHS patient, I know I am very privileged to not only have had the operation, but also to have the counselling. I am seeing him again in August and even though I am in early days and therefore in the easy/easier period, know I will need his input.

Whilst I agree seeing a psychologist or whatever they are called is good for some people that have issues I do not think it is necessary for all people. Some people can benefit from talking about the reasons they have gained the weight but for others the reason the weight was gained is nothing to do with how they think, feel or from what they have experienced throughout their lives. So in my opinion those of us who have not had to see the psych should not be made to feel we have not had the full treatment it was just not deemed necessary for us....this is my personal opinion and not said to upset or annoy anyone...xx

Although for some people who protest they were recommended to see a psyche but there wasn't one available. Some people's stories change over time though don't they?

Linda, I didn't say that anyone should feel they haven't had the full treatment. The only person in my opinion who might feel that way is Teen, because we went through the same hospital.

Whatever reasons people have for being obese, I still think it is a good thing for all bariatric patients to have the opportunity to see a specialist psyche, even if only once.

Sadly, because there are only 4 or 5 in the UK (according to Dr. Kendrick) and hence why the waiting lists are sooo long, there is as much chance of this happening than knitting fog.

Shel I was advised by Dr New that I would see one as standard but Mr Ammori stated it was not necessary for me, nor was the pre op diet...my story is one of honesty so please just get a life and leave me alone....your barbed comments are a waste of your time...xx

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I was merely quoting mine...as I said it was not meant to cause any upset..xx

I have never felt the need to see anyone I was offered councilling when My x hubby left but I refused that aswell and through the pills the Dr gave me in the bin. I consider myself very lucky that I dont need help as such and that I have my health and Have had no probs with anything (health wise ) from been fat.

I am strong willed I asked to be steralized when I was 25 as I dont like kids lol and there was no question about it they just said are you sure I said yes and that was that. My mate has 4 kids and had to pay go private as they said no incase your partener wants more kids. So for me the less people I saw when I was waiting for WLS the better it was lol. Hope that all makes sence I ramble I no lol

i do hope i have not offended any one i was just relaying what my psycologist said to me.ofcourse not everyone needs an evaluation.but during the time i have read minimins there are some members who after reading there storys would have benefited, i say if you get the chance then take it

Bob on eggbat couldnt agree more. Wonder if this is just a NHS thing or do thoes going private get to see a psych. Also for thoes who been NHS funded but attended a private hospital does it differ
