RNY 16 July in Belgium (but from Ipswich)

Hiya

I'm Marcus, 39 from Ipswich.

I have my surgery scheduled for 16 July in Bruges, Belgium.

As I'm going private I haven't been referred to the local (Ipswich area) support group and, from what I can work out, they don't promote themselves online. I opted for private after being advised that I wasn't eligible for NHS treatment due to East of England CCG policy, however could move elsewhere in the country, find a new GP prepared to refer me to tier-3 services, get treatment for up to a year before being referred for tier-4 and IF approved would get the surgery within another year.

I found this a bit impractical as it also meant resigning from my (part time) work and finding a new job, a new place to live etc... and it's difficult enough getting an interview just to have that 'look' when you know they won't consider me.

Ultimately calling in favours and borrowing money from relatives has funded my conversion surgery (I already sold my house to pay for a gastric band that, seemingly (with Barium meal image evidence), has opened up and is now totally useless following about 10 days of tightness after the operation. Still - best not to be bitter. Onwards and upwards!

Sorry if you only use Imperial measurements!

Height: 179cm
Current weight: 161kg
Peak weight: 163.3kg
BMI: 50.2
Target weight: 95kg
Ideal weight: 85kg
Lowest I'll be happy with: 99.99999999kg (I think you get the point!)

My pre-op diet starts next week. I've been told I must eat three Slim-Fast milkshakes every day and unsweetened drinks (with allowance of small amounts of skimmed milk for tea/coffee). Essentially this is a 'three week fast to soften my liver'.

I'm interested in finding out how people cope with the three week restrictive diet - while I accept it's a test of commitment as much as it's reduces weight, softens the liver and hardens fat - it's also a tough call. For sure the next few days I'm cleaning out my cupboards of foods I can't have after surgery (curry more than anything) and having some of my favourite meals I won't be able to enjoy for at least a couple of months (I'm lucky sushi is one of my favourite foods [but I think I'll have to break my liking of wasabi]!).

Anyway, my motivation for the initial surgery (that hasn't really changed) is that I tend to eat more due to almost never feeling full even after a meal more than a psychological eating condition. While I did a lot of comfort eating during a 'dark period' of my life in my teens and early 20s where I lived such a high risk lifestyle, it isn't something that defines me although it certainly set up an environment of bad habits. I have self-isolated for much of the last year but that has been largely sure to financial limitations where leading an active social life would have brought on additional debts.

From this site I'm hoping to build up some new contacts, find people in a similar situation - especially those interested in buddying and have a similar date for surgery, find out more about online support options (I'm already active on a number of Facebook groups) and, perhaps, make some new friends.

I'll stop now or it will need to be in paperback.

Hi Marcus

Apologies for the late welcome. i don't get on very often so your post had disappeared a long way down the page! (Weekends are often quiet)

It is totally cock-eyed that all the different areas work differently. Although I live in Lincs I come under Derby as does Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire yet all 3 counties have different criteria.

Ipswich eh? Reminds me of summer holidays as we lived in Romford and holidayed in Gt Yarmouth so up and down that A12 frequently!!

Good luck with it all.

It's interesting as I used Lincolnshire as one of the ones I compared against (Yorkshire being the other). I noticed in Lincs that the anticipated number of requests was relatively low.

BTW I worked at Skegness last summer as an English teacher at a summer camp at Butlin's for mostly French students + students who actually wanted to learn (non-French students).

I had to escort one of the activity leaders (rather than one of the students) to Boston hospital after he dislocated his shoulder.

Hi Marcus!

Welcome to the group :D

Seen you on the threads, but only just seen your post.

I'm in West London, having a Sleeve on 4th July at St Mary's in Paddington.

I only moved into London last year and my new gp referred me to the Bariatric centre. I didn't hold much hope as I had been refused under Bucks PCT - didn't even make it to a seminar.

But St Mary's operate in a slightly different way, the nurses told me the centre receives there budget and then decides which cases they will take on. In a self funded way. So I've been very lucky from gp to op will be 8 months, 6 months from the first seminar.

I look forward to hearing about your journey!

Good luck xx :)

Hi Marcus, thank you for sharing your story. I'll be completely up front with you - I doubt you're eating due to not feeling full, I think that you have just formed that habit which is far more destructive than it sounds as it is one that won't break automatically post op and can become the grazing that affects weight loss. So just be aware of that and maybe request some help from your team with it.

As for the preop diet, not everyone will agree with me, but in my experience, those who succeed in the preop diet have the best postoperative results. Those who 'cheat' struggle with the commitment post op and often post with big stalls quite early on. Again, I add the proviso that this is my opinion and experience talking, and there is no paper proof.

Surgery is not the panacea it may seem to be but you seem very focused - I wish you the best of luck.

Hi Marcus, are you saying your band came open after just 10 days? Was there no follow up? What happens in situations like that?
Just curious as I am due to banded on Saturday!?!
Good luck with your plan, always good to have a plan I say!
Denise

Hi Marcus, Best of luck for your surgery. I've officially been approved for surgery with Dr Dillemans and I will book my operation this week. International Surgery Group have been very informative and helpful and I'm excited but nervous about surgery. Please let me know how you get on.

I had a few ineffective band fills over a couple of years. a barium swallow and an oesophageal probe. None of them could work out why the band isn't working. I had another barium meal x-ray a couple of weeks ago that revealed the gastric band was open and out of place.

All the images are here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/zuircgvhe4ak2nf/AABNoagzHp9CngcL-UPVQpsga

I've annotated the image that indicates the band is open but once you know what you're looking for it's obvious.

Just wanted to wish you luck, and strength on your pre-op diet, my bypass was 8 months ago in Yorkshire so can't help with the buddying up, but I'm sure you'll get loads of buddies on here, three weeks will be up in no time xx

Thanks for the good luck wishes.

The problem is the surgeon didn't realise the band was open. He kept on refilling it, did a barium swallow (inconclusive) and a oesophageal probe which confirmed nothing was wrong with my stomach. It also cost me a lot of money as it was all done privately. It was only when a new barium swallow for the conversion surgery revealed what was wrong that I put things together and worked out what had happened - and why about 10 days after the surgery my appetite went through the roof overnight. It had been a mystery.

I did contact the original surgeon who suggested that the band could be refitted or replaced but I've lost trust in it and I prefer the option of converting to an RNY. The cost difference is only about 25% anyway and I have read so many negatives about bands that I don't want to chance it again. The fluid in the band was also infected with a bacteria and I had to take high dose antibiotics for six months in 2007, which made me weak, as well as having a special refill of an antibiotic fluid to wash the band. Right now I just want it out of my body.
