Stomach stapling

Following the thread that Yve posted about long-ago surgeries, i have a question. What is the difference between the 'stomach stapling' that used to be done in the 1980's and the gastric sleeve of today?? The stomach stapling didnt seem to work in the long term, can the same be predicted of the sleeve??

I think it's maybe a case of people thinking it was a quick fix years gone by.

These days surgeons make no bones about the fact that it is only a tool and if you go back to your old eating habits it will not work long term.

A friend of a friends Mam had her stomach stapled about 20 year ago and I remember she used to be eating at the dinner table then go and throw up so she could eat more :( not the best way to use the tool we are provided with.

hi Becky,

I;ve just done some googling to try and fine the answer. It seems that the "stomach stapling" of the 1970's is technically called gastroplasty (or in some cases called "vertical banded gastroplasty").

Types of Obesity Surgery | eHow.com -- 5th one down on this list

From what i read there and elsewhere it seems that it was similar to the new POSE operation, in that it folded the stomach (or stapled the stomach) in on itself, without cutting any away .... and the vertically folded / stapled stomach was then covered in some polyurthene "band" / sheath type covering to keep it neat.

I think it was experimental, and hope that the 2 new nearest alternatives (either POSE or vertical sleeve) are now much improved on what they did back then.

Thanks for your research. I have wondered about it before x
