Ultra Energy Shakes

I've been reading some info Bev posted in another thread about nutrition after your bypass, and as I'm such a picky eater anyway, I'm concerned about getting the right amount of the right things after my op.
I know in the initial stages that my diet will be liquid based anyway, and wondered if anyone had any experience with 'Ultra Energy Shakes', and if they were suitable post-op?
It seems I'd be able to get the required amount of protein from them, the info from the web is below:

Nature's Plus Ultra Energy Shakes, 33g individual sachet, choice of flavours. Low glycemic, suitable for diabetics, low fat, low carb (4g "net carbs" per serving). Vegetarian. Lactose free. Yeast free. Gluten free. No polyol sweetener (no polytrots). Replace KetoSlim shakes.

This shake contains a full range of vitamins and minerals to support dieters. It includes antioxidant-rich whole food concentrates, plus rutin and lemon bioflavonoids. It is made with a unique protein blend of isolated soy protein, pea protein and rice protein.

Ultra Energy Shakes deliver taste satisfaction along with factors which help maintain stable blood glucose levels. A blend of herbal extracts including cinnamon, bitter melon, fenugreek and more, is especially beneficial.

This shake's controlled-release carbohydrates help to minimise the impact of blood glucose, while its 4g of dietary fibre support blood glucose stability by slowing digestion.

The formula includes some proprietary blends, called GlucoSmart, which make up for nutrients which may be missing from low glycemic or diabetic diets. This include Metabolism (Super Citrimax, carnite and taurine), Green Whole Food Blend (spirulina, chlorella, broccoli, spinach, olive leaf, green tea etc), Red Whole Food Blend (mangosteen, noni, goji, acai and pomegranate, and enzymes), Flora (lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum and bifidum (probiotics supporting digestion, immune function and overall well-being), and Enzyme (natural enzymes to support healthy digestion (bromelain from pineapple, papain from papaya, Aminozyme and protease.

Nutrition information per serving of 2 scoops (33g): 140 kCal, Fat 1g, of which 0.5g saturated, zero trans fats, Cholesterol zero, Sodium 150mg, Potassium 210mg, Carbohydrate 8g, of which dietary fibre 4g, Sugars 4g, Protein 25g.

Vitamin A, Calcium, Vitamin D, Vitamin K, Riboflavin, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Pantothenic Acid, Iodine, Zinc, Copper, Chromium, Vitamin C, Iron, Vitamin E, Thiamin, Niacin, Folic Acid, Biotin, Phosphorus, Magnesium, Selenium, Manganese, Molybdenum.

Ingredients: Energy Protein Complex (isolated soy protein, pea protein, rice protein), natural vanilla flavour depending on flavour, GlySweet blend of fruit extracts, branched-chain glucose polymers, fructose and fructooligosaccharides), medium chain triglycerides, Glycemynol, GlucoSmart Green Whole Food Blend, GlucoSmart Red Whole Food Blend, phosphorus (amini acid chelate/di-calcium phosphate), Vitamin C, magnesium oxide, potassium (chloride/citrate), microcrystalline cellulose, psyllium seed husk, spirulina, inositol, Vitamin E succinate, choline bitartrate, calcium carbonate, bioflavonoids, rutin, apple pectin, GlucoSmart Metabolism, zinc monomethionine, pantothenic acid, beta carotene, ForLean, PABA, GlucoSmart Enzyme, thiamine HCI, pyridoxine HCI, riboflavin, GlucoSmart Flora, niacinamide, manganese (amino acid chelate/sulfate), lecithin, ferrous sulfate, papaya, chlorophyll, copper aminoate, Vitamin B12, lutein, hawthorn berries, green tea, guggul extract, folic acid, chromium polynicotinate, biotin, sodium selenite, iodine (kelp), molybdenum (amino acid chelate/molybdate), Vitamin D2, corosolic acid, Vitamin K, phew!

My only comment would be that I've always used whey protein as it is absorbed better than any if the others. Some proteins just go straight through you. I'd be wary of the soy protein as most soy products are genetically modified and it's not yet known how safe gm soy is.

Thanks hun, I'll do some more shopping around in that case x

I would agree with shellbell. I'm one of those who are allergic to soy protein. Some of my friends say whey protein is better for your muscles anyway.

Cheap Shakes

I've only just started looking at shakes, i am 18 month post band.
Asda have a promotion at the moment .. Maxitone Sculptress weight loss protein shake, huge tub 700g is £6 should be £25.
I had to order online as they only had 420g instore which was reduced to £12 ??
Strawberry was £6, Chocolate £7.

Ive just tried one made with water, a little weak for a shake (i'm certainly no expert, have only had the proper milk shakes pre-op.) definately a strawberry aftertaste, maybe i'll make with half water and milk for the creamy taste i was expecting heehee.
I'm usually nibbling all night while watcing tv and on laptop.. havent been in the kitchen once ..yet. Had the shake 2 hours ago - seems like a miracle.
I'd hurry before its out of stock. Good luck.

I'd also agree with shelbell. Whey protein is def the best and absorbs well. I'd recommend the 'MyProtein' site for good prices and delivery and they do little sample packs to try all the flavours (I found unflavoured, vanilla, strawberry, banana and raspberry the best)

Wow, the Asda one looks too good to be true! What's the nutritional info on it? Any ideas?

I too prefer the whey protein, I can't stand the thick milky drinks so made with water is just fine for me. I have one every morning for breakfast and feel like Poppey full of energy! Toot Toot

Thanks for all your replies, it's much appreciated x

This is what the ASDA site says for the chocolate one ;

Can someone tell me if it's any good and if it is I'll get some in !!

Normally I recommend and look for less than 2g carbs per portion, the asda one has just over 8g, so for me it would be a no go. But it's personal preference, the sugar content isn't high enough to cause dumping in most people. At 171cals per portion, if you add in the calories in milk if that's what you mix it with then that's a fair old whack.

Sound advice Shelbell ! I won't have any of that in my cupboard !!
