Hi all!
would really love to know what happens on day of surgery in the whittington?
for example,
what time you go in?
what happens when you get there?
did you have a catheter?
what time was your surgery planned for?
did you have a drain?
did you have your own room or was you on a ward?
how long were you there for?
etc etc etc???!!!!????!!!

Sorry for all the questions! Just really don't like the unknown!

thanks everyone :)

Hi Amy
Admission time is 7am. You get taken to admissions ward with everyone on surgical list for that day. here you are checked in, meet anethestist and surgeon for a chat. They do 2 bariatric ops a day at approx 9am and middayish. They will tell you what time then. You are walked down to theatre by a nurse. ou can wear your dressing gown and slippers over your gown. In theatre, you get on the table and they put you out. Everyone is lovely. Post op you spend 24 hours in ITU which is 5 star. You have a morphine pump which you administer yourself and a catheter put in during surgery. When they chuck you out of itu, you go to a general surgical ward which for me was like being on the jeremy kyle set. lol. I left hospital aftrr 48 hours, you may be there longer, depends how you do. Heath operates on fridays and sufi on thursdays. Catheter and morphine pump come out before you leave itu. Hope this helps.

Thanks Caroline! That is more helpful than you know!

Not much i can add to Carolines account one thing i would advise is get visitors to bring you something like yop and nice smooth cup of soup as the hospital does not seem to be geared up to give you anythng other than milk, milk AND more milk and only if you ask !! they have the usual tea coffee and chocolate and some knorr cup of soup whichis okish lol the soup that came up from kitchen when we asked the dietician to arrange was dire.....lol good luck with your op jsut to let you know I had so little pain i thought they had not done it lol

Thanks Judy! Any tips are more than welcome! X

Oh, meant to ask before. How long were you on the waiting list for?

Amy hope you don't mind me asking a few question, like
Did you have a one to one with the nurse at the education session? I was told this would happen to find out what you would like?
What consultant are you under? Did you find out what consultant you would be under at the session?

I was told in a recent letter from Mr Sufi a consultation will me made for me at the education session? is this right? was this how it was for you?
How long did you have to wait for your first consultation and what were you asked ect , of course this is if you don't mind telling me :).

Have a lovely Sunday.
Hugs xx

there were no education sessions last year when I was referred so cannot answer that. Went on waiting list on 5 Jan and had op on april 16. Mr ufi who did my op has a slightly longer waiting list I think and he was away for 2 weeks 2 weeks during my wait.

Great question Amy, ain't you got a date yet?. . . .give em a ring.
Very helpful answeres Caroline and Judy

I was also advised that they hadn't a clue how to feed bypass patients.

I spoke to the dietian and the first thing she said was no bits for 2 weeks. So i think I'll take in some slimfast smooties and bouillion soup, Oh and complan and build up whatever that is dietitan recommended

I can't drink milk, and have always drunk gallons of water and I'm very worried about not being able to quaff in quantities

Also very glad to here you were so pain free Judy, am suffering with inner turmoil, I don't hav butterflies I've got a coiling writhing octopus of fear who by day sends me dashing to the loo and by night screams don't cut my legs off, you don't wanna do that.

I can't believe my op is Friday and I still think I might bottle it.
I know it's the right thing to do in so many ways, but it's so permanent, so forever and ever. How do you know you're doing the right thing

I'm sorry this isn't the place for this ~I'm panicking and it kinda blurted out, but I'll leave it cos I'd welcome your comments
Cheers

I had last minute jitters too. Of course I can only speak from experience but when the weight started dropping off and I was able to walk in the park which I couldnt before and my back ache disappeared and my too small clothes are now getting loose, its worth it. I literally have no appetite. I cannot bear the thought of eating chocolate or sweets which I loved and Ihave to eat by the clock rather than when I am hungry. Im 6 weeks post surgery and I know that several months down the line the cravings may come backjk but I shall deal with that when I have too probably with hypnosis. I too had very little pain post op and they let me out after 2 days. Wouldnt take all that food into hospital as all you really want is water and maybe a tomato soup which they supply on general ward. Good luck, you will be fine and enjoy ITU!

Hi ladies soz to but in but could u pls tell me were u all referred straight from ur gp to the weight management clinic at the whittington and if so how long did u wait till u got an app, my gp a few weeks ago said he would refer me if i wanted to go down that route, thanks xxx

Hi Roche
My gp referred me in February and I got first appt at end of March but I think its changed now with some sort of education session. d think about 8-12 weeks from referral

Thanks Caroline! (((Hugs)))

Diana, the education session was a group of around twelve people sitting around a table. Kirsten the bariatric nurse and Ella the then dietitian was explaining the procedures to us. The pros and cons and where we could get further info.
There were no one to ones. We were told we would be contacted with our consultation dates. I waited around 14 weeks for mine. Also have still not been told who will be doing my op! Although, i assume it is Dr Heath as my original letter was from his team.
Hope that helps a little. Please ask anything you like, always happy to help if i can. ((Hugs))

Iinklii, speak to Lorna almost daily! My funding app only went in last week and has been asked to be fast tracked for a week, so hopefully i should be on the waiting list within a fortnight! ((Hugs))

The-new-roch, i was referred to the whittington from my gp.
Oh and welcome! ((Hugs))

Emmabeee, thanks hun! ((Hugs))

posted this elsewhere but thought i'd add my story so far for those who missed it first time round!
Hi all,
where do i begin?
well, my gp sent off my referral back in september. Finally had group session in november! Had first appt with one of dr heath's minions on feb 10th he informed me i needed a cpex and that because of my lack of co morbidities i should be having my op in late april. He said he was going to send a letter to request my cpex. Anyway, a whole month passed of me calling lorna weekly asking what was happening, only to be told my cpex appt letter needed to be edited by the dr. After a month of calling the letter finally got sent. Went to see respiratory cons in early april. He said i did not need a cpex and that that don't know why one was requested? Instead i had to have sleep studies. So waited 3 more weeks for that (11 may). So now things are really falling behind first dr's schedule! Following week saw dr heath himself and asked him what was going on? He said sorry for first dr's very wrong estimate for my date and that i could not speak with that dr as he is now in germany! How convenient! Also that yes i do need this dam cpex and that original dr now in germany had sent letter to wrong department!!! Now i am seething! Also as my pct (Islington) will not accept apps till all tests are done i'm sitting there now thinking great! Even more delays! Fortunately my mum was with me and managed to persuade dr heath to apply for my funding as the cpex in my case is non essential! So he agreed and said he would email lorna and ask her to do the app. So pleased with outcome i keep hosp and rang lorna to check she had recieved the email. She said that dr heath should have filled it in when i was in my appt in front of me!!! So she was emailing him back a red email to request he does the app. So i called her a week later to check it was done and low and behold, it was still not done but he said he was going to do it last thursday. So i call this tues just gone after bank hols and find out its still not done!!!!!!!!Now i have had enough!!! She said that dr heath would not be able to do it on the weds...

the whittington really does provide a top notch service treatment wise, you just have to keep on top of the appointments and dont be afraid to keep calling and emailing. Their admin leaves something to be desired. Kirsten the nurse is the one to get matey with. She makes things happen.

heres second half! sorry my internet went down!
... AS dr heath was in surgery and she was going on leave till mid of june and so it would have to wait till she came back as no one was replacing her!!!!!!! Now remember i was originally told april!!!! So feeling really crap yesterday morning i rang my mum (bless her) and she said just give me lorna's number and i will call her!!!! So she did and told her how upset this has all made me with all the mess ups and that original false date in april etc etc and asked if anything could be done. Cut a very long story short yes there was and she got the app done today!!! She rang me and couldn't apologise enough! Don't know everything my mum said but boy did It work!!! She was going to ask the pct to fast track my app for one week when usually it can take up to three!!! So if all goes as planned my funding should be approved by next friday and i should be on waiting list the following week! The waiting list is up to 10 weeks at the moment. But as i have few other probs mine could come a little sooner. Also there are always cancellations!!!! I live in hope!!! What a journey so far!!!!! And thank god for mums!!!!!

Thanks again Caroline! Your a star! What is the best way to contact her? Also, what would you suggest i say to her???
