Cant they make wls guidelines, requirements, bmis, pre surgery diets etc etc uniform across the country. We all have the same problems no matter where we live.Reading other threads it is obvious that we are all treated in different ways for the same end result.Very frustrating.

I completely agree. It would make this whole process a lot less stressful!!!

it basically comes down to money and different areas are given diff amounts to fund ops, some areas do lots some only get funding for 12 ops per year. The areas that fund less ops up there bmi requirements ect as demand is becoming very high.

See i thought differently Liz. I thought they make it so hard to discourage people as they start the process. The harder more stressful the more drop out! My thoughts are stick at it and get your surgery come hell or high water....

Unless of course your a Walsall Manor patient in which case, forget it, your beautiful, you look great, why bother getting a big scar and all that hassle.... That's me up the waiting list a bit more hey :) :)

Good luck everyone xx

No Liz is right, it's all about demand in each area.

Compare a borough in London for example, the population density is higher than say my PCT in Surrey.

There is only so much in the NHS pot, and we are lucky we have this as a free service at all these days in this country. If you lived in Europe or America you would have to fund yourself or your health insurance would, the choice is not there.

I know some of you might think, well she has had hers, so how can that be relevant to people still waiting?

Well I know for a fact that I had my op only because of when I applied. The criteria was to have a BMI of over 50, with 1 comorbidity. It has now changed just 6 months ago to over a BMI of over 50, diabetes and sleep apnoea. So if I was applying now, I would have hit a brickwall too. I was told when I applied to start saving, just incase I was turned down. I did not have that to fall back on, so if I had not got funding, I would have had to find another way. The one thing I mentally did was not pin all my hopes on having the surgery. With no expectations I could not be disappointed.

It's shame that some people who really need this operation to effectively save their lives get turned down but that is the way things are, the demand is ever growing and the NHS funds are ever shrinking.

I can only see it getting worse not better.:(

If you look on some of my older posts on Walsall Masssiiivee this is what i've been calling for. Post op care is very hit and miss whether it be private or NHS and i think as band and bypass ops are basically the same standardisation in the bariatric industry should be centralised and made uniform for the whole country. The only things that should change are an individual's health requirements depending on what they are suffering from.

It's way overdue and when i go and see Mr Khan at the end of September i will be voicing these points to him. I will be 11 wks post op tomorrow and i am disgusted at the guidance and support my bariatric team have given me - if it were not for my GP i would have felt very alone and at times bordering on deep depression. However, my GP has been a rock and has seen me through my very slow recovery and does all she can to ensure that i have the best quality of life since my op.

I know these op's are extremely expensive but if we didn't have them then the NHS would pick up the bill for all the health issues you would inevitably have from being so morbibly obese. I am a firm believer in prevention and feel that a lot of good work could come from making sure all the bariatric teams up and down the country are singing from the same hymn sheet so that are pre-op/post-op requirements were met in order for us to go forward and have long and healthy lives.

Well said Lesley cause I feel that I should have been seen a few weeks ago and so does my doc x

My doctor phoned the hospital as my post op first check up was 12 weeks after the op and my dr thought that was way to long. He phoned them and got my appoint bought forward by 4/5 week

It's quite simple B&B...It's because we have a bunch of baboons in charge of the country.......baboons who learnt enough to milk the country give themselves over- inflated salaries and claiming expenses for things that don't even exist.

(((hugs)))

It would be so much easier if it was all the same but unfortunatly its never designed that way. Years ago when i tried the NHS route in Glasgow i gave up after 2 years and was so fortunate to be able to go privately. I have been lucky 3 weeks post op i already have been given my 6 week post op date and my 3 month one, could be down to the fact i have to travel mind you x
