WLS for Dummies.

zetacatty

A loser at last!
I'm well along my path to wls with my pre-op assessment coming up soon. I bought this book just to get a bit more info and have felt depressed ever since! I suppose it wants to remain unbiased but the info in it seems rather pessimistic and now I keep wondering if all the pain is worth it! I just wondered what anyone else thought about it. How did it make you feel? Marion xx

I like the book, I owe it and have lent it out to a pre-op friend. I know that Carole (hopelesscase) also owns it and thinks well of it. What bit has depressed you hun?

Nic:D

The bit where they talk about losing only 50% of your excess weight still being a success.. and the further need to diet...... I KNOW that some people will try to cheat the surgery but it left me feeling a bit deflated. I was hoping my excitement and adrenalin would carry me through but it suddenly seems to have deserted me. Perhaps I'm just having a major wobble. Marion xx

I understand how you feel hun. I was a bit worried that I would loose 70% of my weight and then have some re-gain later down the road and end up one of those people who felt like a failure. It is all in your control and when that is true there will always be people that self-sabotage. Your best weapon in this fight against fat is to get your head in the game. You have to convince yourself that it is life or death that you make real, permanent changes post-op. That is the way to beat the statistics, just promise yourself that you won't be in that small percentatge that backslides and gives in to old head issues. That version of you has to be banished so that the new you can take over. Just remember that the truly wonderful feelings of success in the first year post-op are very motivating so use them to make the changes you need to and you will do very well.

Hugs,
Nic:D

Thanks for that, Nic. Of course, you are right. I've just realised that maybe I was having a bit of a tough time before I actually read the book! There have been a lot of complications and even a death recently and I think I'm just having a major wobble. Not fair to blame the book. When I think how many successes there are I know I am doing the right thing. Thank you for bolstering me up! Well done on your losses so far - you look incredible! Big hug, Marion xx

I own this book and think it's great... Everything you need to know is in the book and if not then it can be easily found on the net.
I only started reading it the other day and have nearly finished it. Great Book xx

hi marion
ive got the book too. it has frightened me as well as being really good. its natural for you to be worried,im still terrified of once i leave hospital. im not scared of dying as im dying already as ill just sit here and eat myself to death. the only real worry for me is that ill be at home and feel sick,as this is my worse nightmare. sorry going of track, basically i know you can do it and will be just fine:party0011:xx

Thanks, Mandy. it all seems to have rushed up at me all at once. I think that I reacted to the bad news of the death and blamed the book for the way I was feeling. These wobbles are bound to creep in when we're not looking. Big hug, Marion xx

Hi Marion

I too own this book and I love it !!!!

I know exactly what you are saying I can only reiterate the excellent advice that nic has given you, we need to make changes for the rest of our lives to not be one of the failing statistics.

I know there does seem to be alot of complications and things lately but more and more people are having WLS compared to even this time last year , so we are bound to hear of the odd person who has problems.

Keep your chin up , remember why you are doing this and remember the support you have to !!!

Is this the best book to buy then? I am going to order something tonight and want something honest and meaty!!!!!!

I've not read the book, but i agree with what Nic's said here, and do remember that stats are only stats, get your head into the right gear and you can lose more than the statistics state, i've now lost 85% of my excess weight, and although my loss has slowed i've changed my end goal from just losing to becoming fit as longer term that will benefit me more muscle and tone wise than just losing weight !

I know how your feeling about the risks etc, and especially as there's been a death recently, but people dieing is very rare.

My surgeon told me tonight the stats for dying from a bypass are 1 in 200, compared to 1 in 20 for a bowel op:eek::eek:Not that i'm worried anyway;)
I also have the book and think it's good, although a but American in places eg the recipes:D:D
