Would I be a suitable candidate for a TT?

Hi all,

Sorry for invading your part of the board but was after some advice please? I did post this in another bit, But wasn`t sure if it`s the right place so am posting here also.

Brief history, I am 4-5 stone overweight and have tried dieting and exercising and am currently on Xenical to try and lose the weight.

I also have an underactive thyroid and PCOS and have been on Metformin in the past and am on Thyroxine.

I managed to lose 22lbs myself with exercising and loosely following my own version of weight watchers but plateaued and couldn`t shift any more weight no matter what I tried :( Thats when I spoke to my Dr who recommended the Xenical.

I am currently into my third week on them and am eating all the right things and exercising and have had minimal weight loss and this week I GAINED 2lbs!!!

My stomach is really FUBAR due to having 4 children, A section with my last child and also major abdominal surgery (more or less same as section but not cutting the womb) including rupturing my bladder - all whilst I was 16 weeks pregnant with my youngest. So whatever weight I have lost so far, Doesn`t seem to affect my tummy :(

You can literally lift my stomach it is so awful, And it looks hideous!! (you can see how awful it is in my latest pics on here) and I often get a certain bit of my section scar gets really icky and sore.

So, I am wondering if I may be considered for a TT as I have already shown that I have tried to lose the weight and have had previous surgeries which means my tummy is buggered and no amount of weight loss is going to improve that.

I also have a history of Cancer which is partly what the major abdo surgery when pg was for which I know my PCT also consider as a reason for a TT. They also consider you for it if you have lost a lot of weight.

Am I living in laa laa land? Or have any of you managed to get funding for similar reasons?

I live in Surrey btw and am under Surrey Heath Borough Council.

Thanks for any advice,

Hi Lisa,

It will vary from area to area.
I know after talking to my plastic surgeon having had children and losing weight will get you a TT.
I was referred to her for breast op and asked about a TT, at the time she said yes to TT because I had lost 9st and had lots of loose skin on my tum. She said one thing at a time as I was about to have breast Op. After the OP my BMI did go up a bit and she said to lose weight before I could get TT. Unfortunatly I gained and gained partly due to taking steroids. I avoided her for over a year and finally gave in and went to see her, she didn't recognise me because of the weight gain. When I explained to her who I was she say she would leave me as an open appointment and when I am ready I could make and apointment to see her.

It helps it you have your GP on said. At the time I didn't, my GP flatly refused saying the NHS doesn't have the money. If wasn't for me needing a breast op and plucking up the courage to ask the surgeon directly I'd had never known it was a possability.

from what iv read once you have lost enough weight you would stand a good chance of one, i think they may expect you to loose more weight first tho but my area doesnt do them so im not in the know on these things good luck

Yeah,
In my area if you are referred by WLS surgeon you have to have a BMI of 30 or below for at least 18 month. This is show your commitment to keeping the weight off.

if not refered by a weight loss surgeon a healthy bmi has to maintained for 18 months to 2 years as pinky says. it also depends on if your area and if they fund plastic surgery.

Thanks everyone for the replies x

I have managed to lose 1 of the 2lbs I gained this week and it was TOTM this past week too so I`m hoping it is just down to that.

I am going to speak to my Dr next week and see what she says. Apart from this 2lbs (which could be hormone/water related) I haven`t gained back any of the weight I have lost since December so hopefully it would show that I AM maintaining my weight, But just cannot manage to lose any more.

I really honestly think that even IF I did lose the weight, I will still be left with my hideous tummy :( So will prob need a TT at some point whatever.

Good luck to any of you waiting on surgery! And to all who have already had it, Hope everything is going well
