ADVICE..what do I need ?? NEWBIE!!!

emma-louise

my new life!!
Morning all..
Please can some help me ?
Im due to have my bypass in 3 weeks, and Im getting so nervous.
Ive spoke to some lovely people on here for advice, but Im still confused!
I want to know what sort of foods do I need to buy in for after my operation ? Can anyone tell me what sort of daily foods do I need to make sure Im having to make sure Im getting all my protien etc..or at this liquid stage does it not matter ?
As new to this site,Im finding it all very confusing as what I need to make sure Im eating per day(as well as your vitamins).
Do you get information from the nurse/dietican to what you should have ?
I mean Ive looked on ebay and amazon for a recipe book to help me,but cannot find a thing.
I suppose Im panicking a bit,Ive two young children to look after still after my operation and want just to make sure I look after myself too..

If anyone can advise me,I would be greatful..
Ive already bought myself a hand blender, and I got a tub of protein shake in..so just need to know what ingredients to buy!
Was everyone else like me on this site worried about what you should be eating after surgery ?
Its seems all confusing to me..sorry to sound thick!
I just want to be organised..

with thanks xxx

Try this ;) Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies: Amazon.co.uk: Al Roker, Marina S. Kurian MD, Barbara Thompson, Brian K. Davidson: Books

First few weeks on liquid only you'll be on soups and yoghurts mostly. Try and get any extra protein you can, so add cheese or tofu to soups for an extra hit. Make coffee with milk instead of water etc. Try and stock up a variety so you don't get bored, or better still make your own soups and freeze them.

You should get quite comprehensive guidance from your team as to what you can eat and when.

Lots of info here - WLS Recipes Forum - WLSurgery.com - Weight Loss Surgery Support

hi shelbell,

thanks for that Ill look for that book!
by the way you look great! how long has it took for you to get down to the weight you are now?

cheers xx

It took me 9 months to lose the majority of my weight, I fell pregnant at 8 months post op but continued to lose through the pregnancy. I've been maintaining ever since :)

Just a few tips from me....I made soup pre-op and froze it in ice-cube bags (buy a little funnel to fill them) add tofu to up the protein..that way it's easy to control portion size and nothing gets wasted.

Look in the baby food section on the supermarket and buy some little tubs with lids: great for storing food you haven't used - like half a yoghurt etc

also buy (or you may already have depending on how old yr kids are!) a toddlers spouted feeder cup! I'm using one to sip fluids, it gives just the right amount and no wind (as opposed to drinking through a straw)

Watch out for 'hidden' sugars in yoghurts, fromaf frais etc they may be hidden but if you dump, your bdy will find them!

and you should get loads of advice from you dietician too.

Best wishes and let us know how you get on. xxx :)

Ah, another Emma Louise! ;) Theres a few of us y'know.

My advise to you, take a few days and really research this site. I'm mostly a lurker, ive been more active in posting since i got my date.
You can get a LOT of info from here, if i hadnt come here i really wouldnt have much of a clue.
Phatgirl is one of my fave posters here, near enough all of her posts are informative and useful. She has a fair few stickies too which are invaluable.
So just have a good snoop around. :)

Our surgerys are around the same time, so good luck to you. xxxxxx

Excellent advice so far... but bear in mind that every provider has a slightly different regime, so above all, you must follow the dietary advice you will be given when you are discharged. You could always contact your provider now, and ask them what you can do to prepare yourself - they should welcome that as a sign you are thinking about the life changes that lie ahead. Good luck with your journey... xx

Shes one of my favourites too :) In fact I've stolen her and her hubby for the weekend! She doesn't post so much these days, but will always answer a PM if you need her.

Thanks :) I thought i hadnt seen her round in a while, i always keep my eye out for her and you (your my other fave!). I always think of you two when i think of this forum. You've both done amazing.

Hiya and congrats on being so close to your life changing surgery...

Firstly, go to your local library and borrow wls for dummies. I brought it off amazon and it was good but once you've read it you don't really want to read it again. I tend to lend mine out to people at our support group now...

Right, someone (i think thinnerangeal) gave me a link to a website for a chef who has had a bypass and she has some recipes on there that are fab for all stages of post op surgery. Her new cookbook 'Return to Slender' is coming out soon and i shall definitely buy it. Have given you a link so you can get a taster for it...

Let me know what your thoughts are x

Just a little additive, I bought cocoa and drank it with milk every morning, you can add a sweetener (or so my lot said). It sets you up for the day with calcium, protein and it does have some iron in it.

Good luck hun:)

thanks for that!..I really need some recipes for soups,I mean I love them, and I will be able to put all the ingredients in and blend it all up,have you found anything you dump on ?

thanks xxx
