Does any one have any ideas on any questions I should ask or things I should take with me ??

Thank you Emma x

Hi Emma,

I had mine two weeks ago and honestly, I couldn't think of anything to ask! All the questions I could think of were really dependent on the decisions made following my meeting so I just went with an open mind.

They sent me a hefty pack of questionnaires to fill in prior to the meeting. They didn't go through the answers with me in the meeting but said they'd go through them between first and second meeting to help work out a programme for me.

One thing that would be good to know is possible programme options (groups/one to ones) and timescale. Also whether they require you to achieve a weight loss before you can have surgery. This mostly depends on your BMI and health.

One thing I wished I'd jotted down first was my history up til now, so basically how you came to gain weight, which diets you have attempted and any big barriers you think there are to weight loss. That said, they didn't ask specifically for this info, but I felt it would help them make the right decisions about my pathway.

Hope that makese sense? When's the meeting? Hope it all goes swimmingly :) x

Hello lady lumps,

Thank you for the information, my appointment is on Thursday I've only been told to fast and nothing else ? that's why I thought I'd ask. I'm worried they'll take one look at me and think it's a waste of time!

As far as I know it's a one to one appointment I'm just anticipating what's going to happen to calm me lol.

Thank you
Emma

What is this appointment please? I get so confused with all the people you have to see. I have a first appointment with the dietician which I think is a group. Is this the same as the 3rd tier as I haven't been told to fast!

Debbie

Hi Emma,

No problem! I don't know much so far but the Tier 3 first meeting is one thing I do know about.

First things first, stop hyperventilating - I wasn't very clear in my last message! I'm almost certain that your first meeting will be one to one, What I meant was the seminars that follow... in my NHS trust it's either one to one or in a small informal group based on what you and the team thing would work.

Second, stop right there! Why would they think you'd be a waste of time? You've been referred (presumably off your own back), you're on here, you're engaged with the process, and they are there to help you (if you didn't match their criteria, you wouldn't be meeting with them). So you have a right to be there, you have a right to meet with them and to ask them whatever pops into your head and to let them know what you think would work for you. So there! :)

My first meeting consisted of me chatting to a lovely lady for 40 mins and getting weighed. Sounds from the fasting like your NHS also does a blood test at this stage - I'm sure I'll get that joy sooner or later, haha.

Good luck for Thursday. Once you've been there once, it'll be loads easier. Feel good about yourself and feel justified in being there! You are fighting for your health and that is awesome. x

Hi Debbie, I think Tier 3 is classed as engagement with Weight Management Team, following GP referral. Most NHS surgery requires this as I understand it. (could be wrong, sorry if I am!) x

Thanks LadyLumps. I have been invited to join a healthy weight group down here in Cornwall. When I saw the consultant she said she was going to fast track me so, from that, I have taken it that I am definitely having the op. I hope I am right and not setting myself up for a fall!

Debbie

Hi Debbie,
Certainly sounds promising! And yes that sounds like Tier 3 too. I guess they have slightly different names up and down the country.
I would love to be fast tracked. I've done quite a lot of work on my mind (previously had eating disorder) so am hoping to get through the process without repeating too much stuff. That said, it'll be worth it even if I have to.
Have they given you a timescale at all? x

H LadyLumps

The specialist said it will still take 8-10 months but that feels quite quick to me. I want to start getting myself sorted out leading up to it. I have cancelled a long holiday to Australia and Christmas in South Africa to make sure I can attend every meeting and appointment they chuck at me!

Debbie

Hi Debbie
Ooh yes that does sound quick! I'd settle for that! Hehe. And sounds like you're super committed. Hopefully you can do Australia at a later date, and by then you could be in peak health too :-D

Hi LadyLumps

I will be able to do so much more after losing weight. It was a difficult decision as we were going for my sister's 60th birthday so I am gutted but we will be able to have a great time when we go.

Debbie

That's the thing. You'll have the best time when you do go. I usually try to not put things off but I think we are justified in holding off when we know better health is around the corner :)

Good evening lady lumps

Thank you for your reply ? I'm worried I'm just gonna cry the whole time strange I know but I get emotional lol,

Thank you for all your advise xxx

I can't wait till Thursday xx

Hi Emma,

How are you doing today?

I cried a lot in mine! And I am sure a lot of people do. I think it was the relief at being there finally, the thoughts of my past and my struggles with my weight, and the thought of what a difference it would make to my life. It's all highly emotional stuff.

I know we all like to be totally in control especially in a new situation but don't for a second imagine you'll be judged for expressing emotion.

If the person you meet with is worth their salt, they will be compassionate and caring (and will hopefully offer you a tissue!!). And you'll always have all us guys on here too.

Thinking of you. Will await your report on how it went :) xxx

Hello,
Well today went so much better than expected I didn't cry the lady was lovely we went through the different stages have work books to do etc but didn't feel judged or pittied i still have to do the 12 months but I'm sure it will go by quickly

Emma ?

Hi!

I am so pleased that it went better than you expected. That's great and v promising for the whole process. The countdown has started so hooray! And like you say, it'll fly by :)

The workbooks sound interesting... I wonder if I'll have similar.

When's your next appointment? And is it another one to one?

I have part 2 of my assessment next Fri (17th). Hoping for clearer idea of timescale then.

Hope you are feeling good today now that the ball is rolling xxx

Yes I do, can't wait now I know it's a while but there's still that goal there which is great. I think it will be another one to one as the next appointment will be going on to a milk diet, to help reset your mind towards food and show commitment I've been referred for sleep apnea test too although I'm not sure I have this xxx wow I bet you can't wait is yours a one to one ??? Xx

Hi Gladys, I'm in Cornwall and have my 1st appointment next Thursday. Are you living in Cornwall or Swindon? If Cornwall, can I add you as a friend?
Tina

Hi Tina

No, I now live in Cornwall now. I will have to update my profile!

Of course you can add me as a friend. Do I need to do it this end too?
