ALCOHOL & SURGERY

Ive been told no booze for around 6 months! Told its full of wasted calories and after WLS you can get tipsy quicker, I have a 21st cocktail night coming up so I cant drink.....going to be well boring just sipping j2o' all night!

Looooool, think about the outcome. If they put it like that, maybe when you reach goal weight you can dabble in a few. How's your journey, so far?

Hi guys, Just wondering if people are still able to enjoy a cocktail or two after surgery?
Hi lookingforabetterme,
Thanks for posting this thread , I'm looking for an insight also. Can't wait to loose weight to be able to socialise then think will I be the one driving forever and ever!? ! I understand cocktails and wine would be out due to sugar content for a bypasser? Good luck in your journey!

No, all weight loss surgeries affect your reaction to alcohol. Also there is the risk of transfer addiction and lastly of course weight gain.

I was allowed alcohol from 12 weeks post op.

I've had one shot of Malibu in a tropical juice (tasted like a cocktail) lol. It tasted amazing. But I was p*ssed as a fart!!

I won't be having another drink now until Christmas time or when I go on holiday in March.

I have found that since the surgery. I don't miss alcohol or fizzy drinks. My tastes are changing.

You may find the things you like now won't be the things you like or want post op xxx

I went out last night and over 4 hours I sipped 4 malibu's with coke plenty of ice to take the fizz out and was fine I wasn't drunk at all, it's not often I drink but its nice to have the choice, my team were ok with booze after 6 months, I waited about 8 months :)

My team's literature says 12 weeks before you can have any alcohol, and gives the warning that you shouldn't ever drive after a drink, due to the heightened effects (it passes into your body quicker after surgery). They say if you want alcohol after 12 weeks, then only small amounts with caution.

I'm not much of a drinker these days, so it doesn't impact me (fortunately) at the moment.

i was told i could drink after 12 weeks.

i now have some wine at the weekends, but it does get to you quicker than before

Thanks for all your info. To date they have not said much to me about alcohol other than hidden calories. Maybe they will give me more info in regards to when I can dabble, post op. Baring in mind I still have not been given a date, just thinking ahead of time. Due to consuming a few glasses of Baileys this weekend.

Thank you for all the info - very useful! I'm just trying to imagine a life after my by pass op! I can certainly get used to the odd tipple of Malibu if required! I'm usually a vodka diet coke girl but was worried about the bubbles in the coke, but can stir flat with ice - yay! Don't intend getting hammered any time soon after op but I'm just wanting to go into my op with my eyes open!
Have a good day y'all! X

Spot on Yvessa. Transfer addiction can be a very real issue and has been for some of our members.

Also if you do partake beware of the hidden sugars in your mixer drinks, J20 for instance is very high. The unused sugar will be stored by your body as fat.

I am certainly aware of one person who ultimately has done very well, but had to deal with a serious alcohol addiction at one point.

Another reason why we need to be so vigilant, we just don't know how surgery will effect us until we have it.

Good luck my love. xx

Mrsg74 when's your surgery date. I'm new to this can't see everything at the mo.

Yes a, that must of been very hard for your friend from one addiction to another. I'm trying to understand as much as I can so I know what I'm up against before surgery

Lookingforabetterme I'm booked for 7/11. I paid my invoice today but it still just doesn't feel real! I hope my head catches up with the decision I've made before then!
