I agree with the girls... Orlistat is ok as long as you follow a low fat diet :)

I was on it for about 6 months back in 2000-2001 and it was fine, until I fell off the wagon and straight into a chinese takeaway... oooooh, never again!!! :giggle:

Fingers crossed that everything works out for you...

Hi Emz
I think my PCT is Brighton and Hove too, i went to my GP who was very supported and referred me two weeks ago for surgery. However I just heard back from her who said I have to show that I have been trying for 1 year to loose weight other ways. I think she must have failed to mention the countless numbers of diets i have been on over the past 12 years plus. I tried Orlistat a few months ago but i had lots of stomach pains with it - plus i have a BMI of 53!
I dont know which way to turn now, I certainly dont have the money to go private, i wish i did.
I hope your orlistat goes well and wishing you lots of luck.

Hi Lucy,

Make a list of everything you have tried, include dates if possible and results, and take it back to your GP.

Don't give up!

Shel

PS. welcome to mini's :D

Hi
I am east sussex too - Hastings.
I have just got my funding approved.
I was told all referrals in east sussex go to worthing PCT the criteria is NICE guidelines - BMI over 40 or 35 with co morbidities.
I was given the choice of Dr Horner in AShford middx if I wanted a band or Shaw Somers team in Chichester if I wanted a bypass.
The process took 10 weeks from gp letter to funding OK'd - but they lost me and we had to start process again .
I would advise checking each person at each stage has received the paperwork.
The girl at Worthing PCT is lovely soz cant remember her name.
Wait list for appointment after funding ok's is 4-5months for consulatation and 6 months from there for surgery.
Hope this helped
xx

dont know about the xenical issue as i had been on it previously and my GP did put that in the referral letter

Hi and welcome to the site. You just need to be very clear with your GP tomorrow that you know what you want and won't take no for an answer! You sound like alot of us on here and have exhausted alot of the other diet options with short term success. the bypass will be permenant and will help your health no end! Best decision i have ever made. good luck and look forward to seeing how you get on x

hello ladies, 1st time here, not sure if im doing it right...appointment to see consultant, hopfully booked for surgery (banding) oct 26th,,help!!

hi vivien.. welcome to site..
i had band 10day ago and everything went well and im on the loosing side now.
where you having op done?
good luck.

hi emz, i think you were too nice, the approach i would try is one that i have tried and failed on everything, yes i can loose the weight but the maintenace is the hardest bit and you look at the band as a tool to help and remind you and you went to him for his help and support not another method which you know as with all of us will fail.

good luck and post soon

Hi emz welcome to the site and sorry to hear about your unhelpful GP. Mine applied for funding after over two years of various attempts to lose weight mostly controlled by my GP, Reductil and Orlistat. I found out about weight loss clinic at hope hospital whilst waiting for a reply from PCT and just days before my appointment with Dr New the PCT wrote to say I need to attend weight loss clinic for two years. My GP immediately wrote back saying would they take into account the fact I had been trying since Feb 2006 and we are still waiting to hear. However, Dr New at first wanted to put me back on reductil (tried it on three occasions never lost an ounce even on higher dose) and 300 cals a day of my choice. When I spoke to him more about my way of life and me he then decided I would be suitable for either banding or bypass (bypass had never entered my head) he wants me to speak to surgeon who specialises in bypass and the psychologist and dietician and then see me again, so no tablets or low cal diets just waiting. When he has written his recommendations to my GP the GP can then contact the PCT again and ask fro funding. I know what you mean about the weather I abolsutley hate the fact I sweat so much I have to have a large fan in work and as you can imagine it makes me stand out even more. I have been on a roller coaster ride and now feel more positive due to Dr New. Keep posting on here and you will get support and advice form the lovely people they have been a treamendous help to me.....sorry for rambling on lol I do talk at times.....(((hug))) your not alone....Linda x
