Anyone had dr el hasani as their surgeon?

Hi Lisa and Mark - my name is Rose and I have just been referred to Mr El-Hassani for WLS. He has offered me a gastric bypass. However, I was very unhappy after my consultation on Monday - it didn't start well when he never responded to my "good morning". I felt he was abrupt and very unpersonable. Is he always like this ? I came away thinking that surgery was the last thing I wanted from him... but I know I have to do something as my health is really suffering.

I was feeling so unhappy and tearful at work today I had to leave and come home. I think I have hit rock bottom. I am worried and confused. I am terrified about the impact surgery would have not only on me, but on my husband. Would we ever be able to enjoy a meal together again ?

I live very close to Farnborough (about 15 minutes drive) and would dearly love to be able to talk to somebody about all of this.
Thanks :wave_cry:

Hi there and :welcome: sorry to hear your initial meeting didn't go so well, BUT he has offered you the bypass surgery which is the main thing out of all of this...regardless of his demeanour the result is you'll get your surgery that'll be life changing, so don't worry if he seemed abrupt....there will be an impact on you and your husband, course there will, you'll be losing weight for a kick off, and that'll be huge for you both, but that's what we all want, and i'm sure your hubby is 100% behind you in doing this, it'll be brill!! and re the meals, well, to start with you're gonna be eating mush until you're well and truely healed, BUT then after that, you'll be back on solid food, and a normal meal will be fine and dandy....just alot smaller portion size than you'd be used to now, so in the short term it'll impact, long term, no probs ;)

Hi Lisa

I am having Mr El Hasani do my gastric bypass on 10th October... I was given the date yesterday.

When I met him he seemed a bit off but as long as he knows his stuff I'm happy.

Can you tell me about how you felt straight after the operation? And how long was it before you could go back to work? I've pencilled in 3 weeks..

thanks

xx:confused:

Hi RoseA...........I actually live in Farnborough village "5MINS" walk from Farnborough hospital...I started with Mr El Hasani and the NHS and ONLY due to the length of wait did I decide to take the plunge and pay for the treatment...I did in fact as mentioned earlier have this surgeon remove my gallbladder at Chelsfield Park hospital..."TRUST ME"....here he is a very good surgeon and the acid test on how best to judge is the "number of procedures" they have actually done...He may be abrupt, very quiet etc, etc, and WONT ever be a "stand-up comic" BUT he is a good surgeon and knows his onions....

If you need any further advice please just let me know and I'm currently coming up to 4 weeks post op and doing "just fine" with my new body and eating regime......

Mark of Farnborough Village..

hi coolas

so pleased you got your surgery date wont be long!!!!
i went into hospital on the monday night and was discharged the following monday, i had no problems and was told id be out on the friday before by the secretery but was kept in till the monday when i asked them they seem suprised i was told the friday. i did find it painful the second day after the op once they took the morphine away! this was bearable when i was relaxed in bed but hurt when getting out of bed and when bending but this only lasted a couple of days and got better every hour. i had nothing to eat from the minute i went in till the day i left  and just had the cartons of ribena light that id taken with me. the nurses are fantastic and my scars are fading by the minute ive had no problems whatsoever, no sickness or neusea and felt great after 2wks so 3wks off work should be perfect! any more questions dont hesitate to ask.

oh thanks so much for replying Lisa!
I do have a few questions/things I'm a bit worried about:
1) the catherta?
2) the pipe they put up your nose - do you have this in for a few days afterwards
3) how are you managing now it's all over? Can you go out for a meal and just have a starter?
4) the pre-op diet - I think sugar free jelly is going to be a life-saver- do you have any tips for this?
5) this dreaded 'dumping' mechanism - is it fairly straightforward to avoid?

hi coolas
1) the cathetar i had it put in the night before my op very embarrassing as it was also my TOTM'S!!!! the nurse was fab and it really didnt hurt at all and was over in seconds.
2) the oxygen tube which sits on your nostrils is fine and much better than the mask, you hardly know its there.
3) im doing really great now, i just kept saying to myself that im going to have a really horrible week(in hospital) but it is just 1 week compared to the rest of my life. i was so suprised how calm i was on the day of my op in a weird way i was even looking forward to it!! think after 10months wait i just wanted it over with. i feel great now and as i said have lost 4stone in 3.5mths and 57inches!! the last few wks i have found i can eat a childs plate of food, if i eat out i normally share some of someone elses dinner(i do have my own plate)example fish pie or a carvery roast. i can eat alot more variation of food then i thought would be possible and dont feel deprived at all(dont tell anyone but when i was on my hols i even had a small amount of fish n chips)!!!!
4) im really fussy so on the pre-op diet i lived on chicken breast, peas, a little gravy and ice-pops.
5) i havent dumped at all and on the odd occasion i have peanut butter, ketchup, twister lollies, jaffa cake and even a couple of jumbo choc buttons!!
hop this helps you, where do you live and how lng have you had t wait for your op?

thanks so much for that.

I live near Bromley. I had an appointment with Mr E-H in May and so will have had a 5 month wait - he said it would be about a year so I'm really surprised.
You're right - it's one bad week then hopefully lots to be positive about.

I met 'Star' - did she do any after-care sessions?

hi coolas, wow that was quick he's a stern looking bloke dont you think? mind you i heard he'd been married 4 times!!!! i lived near crofton lane for twelve years and my partner worked at bromley civic centre, we moved down to herne bay a year ago. the bypass op is one of the best things ive ever done, i found the pre-op(only the 1st 4 days)and the 2wks after the op the hardest, i think its the mind fighting the food demons! but one day it just all seemed to click into place and and my head seemed to catch up with my new stomach, to me the only difference between now and before the op is that theres a tightening of my stomach and when that happens i know ive had enough and stop where as before the op i would have ate mine and any leftovers thats why i weighed 22+ stone!!!

forgot to say about star! if im going to be honest i think the pre care and after care has been awful, i saw star once before my op and was with her about 5mins, i left hospital with a diet sheet which to me didnt seem to go into much detail, since op ive seen her twice, she's really nice but if it wasnt for this site and the advice you get on here i'd have been clueless so my advice to you is to read, read and read the knowledge on here is priceless.

Hi Lisa, ive seen mr el hassani and just seen star this week, and got put on the 12 month waiting list for the bypass. Can you tell me from your time at the hospital if everything was ok with your stay there. Im the shyest of people and the thought of the nhs is scary, being on a ward with all kinds of different people that are not in for the same surgery. Did you wait 12 months, or was it a little less? Thankyou

hi mark, replied to your thread about weighting list before i saw this one!
the hospital stay was fine so try not to worry, the nurses are fantastic. i had to go in on monday evening after 6, had laxative given to me tuesday morning to clean my stomach out, went down for surgery at 1.15 on wednesday was back on ward at 6.45 had morphine which i controlled as an when i needed it, was off pain killers by saturday and went home monday morning first thing, it did seem a very long stay but the nurses said mr el hasani was very protective of his patience so i wasnt going to complain!!! ive healed really really well and have had no problems whatsoever, lost 4 and a half stone in 15wks and feel great, it really is worth the wait and the time goes really quick i promise. where do you live? i lived in woodcote drive near crofton school but moved to herne bay a year ago.

Hi Lisa, many thanks for your reply, its so good to hear good things about Farnbrough hospital, i have never been to hospital before, im even scared of the doctors lol. I live not far from swanley, so fingers crossed it will be a bit less than 12 months.

Hi all... I've been away so just catching up here again. Not feeling quite so down now. The first time I posted I was coping with rather a lot - only 3 days before the appointment with Mr E-H I was in Farnborough having a biopsy for suspected cancer... which came back all clear thank goodness, but I still don't have a diagnosis for the original problem. I have a follow-up appointment on Monday for that.

So Mr E-H is rude to everybody eh, well at least it wasn't me ! I'm glad you folks say he is a good surgeon. I take it he does keyhole and not open surgery ? He said he'd send me an invitation to an information session but I haven't heard anything yet... how long should I expect to wait ?

I live in Biggin Hill by the way. There seem to be a few of us living not too far away. It would be good to meet for a coffee or something, wouldn't it ?

hiya Lisa

Now you've had the surgery 3/4 months ago, what do you eat in a typical day? And have you set foot in a restaurant at all?!

hiya rose, lisa here im so so happy that you got the all clear, what a huge relief for you hopefully now you can concentrate on the WLS. i didnt get invited to any sessions! but im sure it wont be long till you get yours. mr el hasani specialises in keyhole surgery(thank goodness) so like me you will be left with 5/6 small punture scares which are fading by the minute.
i know biggin hill very well, my best mate lives in swievelands rd, are you in the valley or up top?

hiya Lisa

hi coolas

on an average day i have either:

brekkie: bran flakes, natural yogurt, wholemeal toast with peanut butter or fresh orange juice.

lunch: wholemeal cheese and salad cream sarnie, soup, fish, tuna mayo or ham salad.

dinner: jacket potato(no skin), lamb chop and veg, chicken in white wine sauce, bacon(no fat) egg and baked beans

snacks: delmonte fresh orange lollies or mini twisters!!!!!!!

i have been to a few restuarants and have been fine and not felt deprived at all. i have had a carvery, salmon, fish pie or jacket potato just not finished them but have felt full and satisfied.

its now 17 wks since i started my pre-op and im now 2lb short of losing 5 stone i really cant believe it!!! i can almost eat what i want now just in smaller helpings which is why i now weigh 17st 5lb instead of 22stone 3lb!!!!!!!!!

oh fantastic.
You are such an inspiration. Whenever I get worried I log on here and re-read what you write and I feel better.:wave_cry:

Dreading the 2 week starvation diet. Noticed it said 'steamed fish or chicken' - how the hell do you steam chicken?! :eek:Do you think those pre-cooked slices of roast chicken from M&S would be OK??!

And where did you get clear soup from? did you make it?
