anyone with a bmi under 45

Hi,I have a bmi of 37,I was referred by my doctor after years of dieting and weight problems, which have led to many health issues. At the moment my blood pressure has been the worry, since having my daughter's 9 years ago there has been big issues with it and more recently it has got a lot worse.I originally wanted a band, but because I am taking so much medication my consultant wanted me to have a sleeve gastrectomy.I wasn't aware they did this surgery on someone with my bmi I thought it had to be higher, but I was told this isn't allways the case,I have gone through all the tests and appointments over the last year and been given the all clear to go,and have been told I should get my date for the surgery in the next 2/3months.

I'm only at the start of my journey but have a BMI of 38. I've just been diagnosed Type 2 Diabetic and so that spurred the referral. My GP didn't hesitate.

I'm wondering Shelley, how much weight have they expected you to lose this last year..?

I'm worried that if you do really well, they will say that surgery is off because clearly you don't need help!

Claire :)

Hi Claire, they haven't actually said anything about how much weight I need to loose yet,I am assuming they will tell me on my pre op appointment, weird that you should mention it but on all my clinic appointments I have been losing weight,to me I know it will eventually go bk on no matter what, but like you I have been worried that they would say ok you are losing weight so maybe you don't need it,it is a fear I can relate to,and like I said I yo yo with my weight all the time no matter what I eat or don't eat, vicious circle, now I have been told I have been listed I am hoping it will be sorted soon

I have a BMI of not quite 40 but have High Blood pressure and been on meds for about 5 years. I also have Osteoarthritis.
I am only 5' and small boned . I am a Newbie and am still waiting to see if my refferal has been accepted at Derby.
My G.P knew nothing about the protocol for wls.
It is a long road but i am prepared to go with the flow. It would be wonderful to come off or reduce the meds and be able to walk around and not be in pain.

Hi Jayne, good luck with your referral, although i find it a bit strange that your gp isn't quite up to date with wls,if for any reason you are turned down keep pushing,i am sure you will get there if you push them enougth as you know blood pressure is very dangerous, this reason alone should push your referral,my blood pressure hasn't gone down to an acceptable reading for 9 years since having my twin daughters and I have had meds changed so many times, wls was a last resort for me,in order to get it down, although I also have other med issues.By the time I was referred in late febuary 2014 to the date of my surgery which will be August 2015 it has been a long time waiting, but am sure it will be worth it,obviously it's different time scales in different areas,if you keep pushing you will get there,I am relatively new on wls like your self, but it is an amazing site and some wonderful people to give you all the advice you need, good luck again

Hi Shelly
Thanks for your support. My BMI is just on $0 and like you i have been on Hypertension drugs for a few years now.Iam also Pre-Diabetic.
I Contacted Derby hospital myself and their unit E.mailed me back with their criteria.Once my G.P had seen this he referred me and Derby Royal also e.mailed me to say they had received my referral and accepted it.
