:help2: Dear mins,

You all knwo what happened to me last time when i went to my Gp for asking him to refer me for surgery. in short, He didn't even wanted to listen to me and just ignored the whole topic by saying 'what ever you rean on the internet is different and not true'.

As all of you said i took another appointment with another Doctor in the Practice. Now i am scared that this doc also might do the same as i just registered to this GP few days ago.

Please give me some ideas about how to start the topic or what should i tell her? I don't have any option of going back to my old GP as i moved only a mile from that area and my old GP won't cover the area.

Please give me some ideas.

You need to keep calm and tell them how really unhappy you are about your weight and that its getting you down, and that, no matter what you do you Can Not lose the wiehgt and keep it off on your own. I know how hard this must be for you because My doctors are a load of S***t and never ever listened to me about my deprression, but try and explain everything to them, even write a list of what you want to tell them and take it with you,
I'm sorry i can't help any more, but The best of luck!!
Let us know how you get on. x

Thanks fat girl slim. I will try to tell tell her those. should i write a letter and give it to her?

I know when you are stressed your mind can go completely blank...So write it all down...Tell the doctor that you are nervous and worried about forgetting all you need to say..Then you can read it all back to her and discuss it in parts as you go, you can then offer it to her.

Make sure you include all the symptoms you have been experiencing both mental and physical.....

I hope she is sympathetic with your plight...Good luck.

Great advice above. Yes if you feel like you can't talk write it all down and give her the letter to read for her self. Even if you think it sounds silly, tell her everything.

Good luck I hope all goes well.
I think tesmaralda has given you some very good advice. I'd have a long hard think about any random symptoms that my be down to obesity.
My journey started with a trip to the docs with a rash on my upper feet that she thought along with the other things that they were all at root a by product and she asked if I'd thought about surgery!!! I was staggered! That was four years ago, but I've not been rushing things

Thanks to all of you for your help and support. I have printed the BOSPA and NICE guidlines. i will also write down all the symptoms. They are already tensed about my diabetes and High blood pressure so i think it will help.

Hope your appointment goes well for you x

OK so here is what happened today at the GP,

I went and told the doctor my problems. She was nice. she took my height and weight. by the my weight is 98kg now. I was about 105kg last time wheni checked. She told me I am diabetic for sure. She wants me to start weight watchers program and may be leter she will give me some weightloss pills. When i informed her that i have already tried all those and couldn't loose much and asked about surgery she said its a life threatning process and left for the last option. She also informed me that from this practice they can not refer me to any surgeon. The specialists do that not the gp. She was confused if i meet the criteria for surgury or not, i showed her the NICE guidlines. She said anyway you have to start with weight watchers first.

Now,
If the GP can not refer me for the surgery, what should i do? i am so confused....who are the specialists? where can i get them?
I will keep doing the weight watchers program which GP referred me to but they won't be able to refer me for surgery.

the referal can be made by the gp. it seems the gp doesnt know alot about the process and is passing you off to someone else, most people on here are refered by the gp or a consultant they see for 1 of there health issues, shes in the wrong for refusing you a referal thro her lack of knowledge.

Thanks for the reply Liz. Yes, I thought the same. She wants me to see a nurse in another practice for weight watchers but i don't know if the nurse will know more than the GP about the surgery. What should i do now?

Thanks MARGARET, I think i will try to findout about the locan obesity clinic. I wrote to someone in the Tower Hamlets PCT for advocacy and advice on 14th may but didn't get any reply yet.

Thanks for the reply Liz. Yes, I thought the same. She wants me to see a nurse in another practice for weight watchers but i don't know if the nurse will know more than the GP about the surgery. What should i do now?

go and see the nurse explain whats happened today and thats how you come to see her, take everything you took to show the gp and show her, tell her you know all the risks and understand the ins and outs of having wls, after all its not down to the opinion of the gp or a w/w nurse to decide if your a suitable candidate for surgery, that decision can only be made by the surgeon himself, these gp's that think there god and refuse a referal make me mad, it took a year of fighting gp's to get my referal so i know how your feeling. stand up for your rights dont back down as everyone has the right to be refered if all other avenues have been previously tried before.

good luck !

Some PCTs require the patient to have completed some kind of weight management before they will consider funding. This can then be evidenced within your medical records whoch the GP can produce as evidence for the PCT (He/she will need to complete a questionnaire for the PCT).

If you have tried Xenical before, that should be on your medical record.

It may be that your new GP wants to ensure you have exhausted every possibility before referring you.

Did she tell you what your BMI is?
