Appointment with a new Doctor at 1pm today

Yes my BMI is 40.2 now. Before it was 43.1. From last few months my weight is going up and down suddenly. I think this is because of diabetes. GP was confused about if i meet the criteria for surgery.

If you have diabetes and or high blood pressure the minimum BMI under NICE guidelines is 35, so you definately meet it.

yep you definatly meet the requirements, id go back and tell her that you have looked into this yourself and you do meet the requirements, your gp just seems either a little behind with the times or shes a new gp.

all the best farzu hope this doc is a lot better at his/her game than your last one and a lot more ofay with wls
good luck girl

it's very frustrating, but GP's don't always know much about wls.
I went to see mine on Monday because I have an eye infection that just won't shift, so whilst I was there I asked her if I could get one of my meds in liquid form and explained to her that I'm having a band done next week...she was really interested but didn't know anything about the process of how they did the fills and thought that a person had to be 'opened up' to have it done :rolleyes::rolleyes: I told her about the pre op diet (milk & yoghurt for me) and she was confused as to why we had to do that too :rolleyes::rolleyes:
she did look suitably shocked when I told her it was costing me £7000 though :D

you just got to lead them by the hand at times and tell them what they need to do :argh:

This is a bad system that people have to get referred by the GP where most of them do not have any idea about weight loss surgery. They thinks its too life threatning and only can be done to very very very obese people. What i think is if i live as i am living now, I will be dead by next 2 years with all these diseases caused by my weight. Why don't they understand?

Today, when i saw the doc i was angry like hell. She was soooo thin, her legs looked like a pair of chopsticks. She was chinese by the way :p and gave me a good lecture on asian food lol. I am thinking of taking an advocate with me on the next appointment.

hmmm yet another gp thats not up to speed with wls and the critira this seems as it goin to be hard work for you just to get the referal you need to get started on you journey try printing off all the info from nice and your pct for the doc to gen up on and see if that make any difference girl or try and find some one in your area that has been reffered and change to there doc if thats poss
regards rambo

My old GP is just 0.6 miles away. Not even a full mile. My Doc there was very nice and supportive. She referred me to fertility clinic and hypertension specialist without even asking. I used to feel like she was there just to refer me to specialists. I wish i could go back to that GP. Thay said they don't cover my area. its very frustrating. Is there any way?

Do you live on the edge of town??? Because my surgery is same distance as yours and i can be seen there!!! I just thought if you come under another borough or sumfin that could well be the case as to why they say you come out of the attachement area..........when i lived in my old town my gp was 5 miles away and at no point did they tell me i could not stay with them, i only changed gp's to suit my own needs.............if you do come under the same borough as the gp's surgery that is 0.6 miles away so to your pct and ask them for a list of gp surgeries available for you to attend to (as they list em all)

all the best - mejulie xx

I agree with Lisa, your GP may be a little out of touch.

I've been reading from Homerton Hospital Guide to Obesity Service and it say you meet the critria for a Band. Referral can come from GP or another Consultant.

Can't your Hypertension Specialist refer you?

NO, I haven't been to the specialist yet. I moved form my old house before the appointment and didn't get the letter :(

I'd chase up the appointment it may be a chance of getting OP, If your GP is unhelpfull.

Thanks pinky, i don't think i will be able to get that appointment back without another referral :(

I agree, I read and commented on this thread and saw nothing.

I never realised that there is any thing worng in any of the posts in this thread. Every thing seemed to be very normal. I am very hurt to know that people here can not speak from their heart.
