BMI falling before surgery

I'm sure this has been asked and answered somewhere on this site, but I've had a good look and can't find it. So excuse me if I'm asking again.

My BMI is just over 40 at present and I don't as yet have my next appointment date. I'd actually like to lose some weight before my appointment, but if my BMI drops, will they no longer consider me suitable for WLS? x

Some people seem to think it goes on your starting weight, but others say it does affect the decisions made. So I think it is dependent on your surgeon/weight loss management team.

Thanks Sharron. It's daft really, the temptation now is to NOT lose weight before my appointment x

My surgeon goes by the weight you 1st weigh in. At my 1st appointment my surgeon asked me to lose 7kg before he would do the bypass.

It depends on your PCT and your doctor/hospital. My BMI was nearly 44 at my first appointment but if I lost the weight they asked me to at the hospital, I would fall below the 40 BMI. I have comorbidities but the surgeon said my problems don't count as comorbidities to my PCT. My hospital also does not apply for funding until you see the surgeon. I have to see the weight management team for a year to meet the NICE guidelines for my PCT/hospital before I get referred to a surgeon.

I asked about this at St Richards. The psychologist said that she had never come across a case where someone has been refused surgery because they lost weight beforehand. I was worried that my BMI might drop below 40 (if only, I have in fact gained), she said it wouldn't be a problem.

im really worried !!!ive been to see dr new and my gp has now applied to wigan and leigh for funding ,the next meeting sept 23rd .but ive looked at the minutes from previous months and they seem to be refusing funding and referring people to the specialist weight management team ,so it aint looking very hopeful and i meet all the NICE criteria

i lost 2 1/2 stone before my surgery, admittedly this was after he had said yes, but most surgeons i'm sure would prefer you to lose some weight rather than stay at the same or put on, the only option really is to phone them and ask

Which pct are u under and which hospital. If i was in ur situation my personal choice would to not lose weight till the funding app has been put in but to not gain any either.
As ur Bmi is just over 40 if your pct are difficult with funding then it could cause a prob.
Like others have said every pct and hospital operate diff, some send the funding off at the weight you were referred at and some at the weight when you see the consultant.
Also if your weight drops below 40 and u have no co morbidities then the surgeon can decide that you may not be suitable for wls, this has happened b4 to others.

I know its a lot to take in but even in my case where my bmi is 60:eek: i am now 24lbs down from the initial weight i was referred at in June and my next app is with the consultant at the Whit in 3 weeks time and i wont be losing any more weight till my funding app is safely on its way as my pct are not very easy.
Once my funding has gone on its merry way then no matter what the decision is i am going to get back on track and lose as much weight as poss but i have waited so long for wls that i can wait another 3/4 weeks at this weight to make sure i get the chance i so desperately want.
Take care xxx

Me losing weight has gone against me and also I was referred to the weight loss clinic only to be told they wouldnt be seeing me again. as e1 else states it all depends on your pct.....mine has refused me on the basis that I lost 4 stone prior to see anyone.........even though I need to lose a few more stone, this infact doesnt have any bearing on my case nor has my comorbities....and I have severals and meet all the criteria as well......................

My problem is that I know I could lose some weight if i really put my mind to it right now - but I also know that it would all go straight back on again (plus!) after a while. I need something that will help get off the see-saw x

I'm under Charing Cross Hospital which is Hammersmith and Fulham PCT. However, I live in Barnes and the PCT there is Richmond & Twickenham. Which one do they go by? x

Thanks Bluediamond x
