Burning 'Band' Questions?

Tamgredan

wanna be happy!
Hello everyone,

Ive decided im going to have a gastric band, and ive spent hours upon hours doing research on the internet and ive still got some questions im unable to find answers to, so im hoping you can help.

1) Currently when i get so hungry that i am shaking, i have to get food down me real quick as i hate hunger pain. With a band i know ill have to eat either something easy like soup or chew really slow, but how hard was it for you to adjust to this?

2) I often have to go out on business meals, which means food and alcohol. Eating slow will be fine as we chat so much that the meal takes ages anyway, but after the meal we always have a few wines. If i cant drink for 1 hour after eating im stuck with what to do? also, will i have to give up 'spicy hot' food like indian as i cant drink after eating?

3) If i was to eat too fast or not chew enough and was going to be sick or have slime, how long after eating does this generally happen? is it immediately? or could it happen an hour later? reason i ask is that i work night shifts and when im in the factory, it takes about 10 minutes to get to a toilet and i dont want to be sick in the factory.

4) Im going to pay for this private, so does anybody know how long it will be before i get my band, if i was to make my 1st phone call this Thursday?

Thanks

Hello everyone,

Hi hope my answers help :D

1) Currently when i get so hungry that i am shaking, i have to get food down me real quick as i hate hunger pain. With a band i know ill have to eat either something easy like soup or chew really slow, but how hard was it for you to adjust to this?

Yes you will have to eat slowly and chew etc, can I ask why you allow yourself to get so hungry, is it a time thing? With the band 3 small meals plus if you need to healthy snacks ie fruit works best.

I didnt experience what you are describing though.

Ok so the eating slowly is fine, after the meal a few glasses of wine will be ok just try and wait a bit longer for your first, also be aware of the calories in the wine.

I still eat spicy food with no problems.

Cant help with this, the only sickness I have had is from illness post band BUT I have felt discomfort from either eating a bit too much or a bit too quickly - I just stop, walk around a bit and it shifts.

4) Im going to pay for this private, so does anybody know how long it will be before i get my band, if i was to make my 1st phone call this Thursday?

You can have it a) when they can fit you in and b) when you want it.

Thanks

Good luck!

Hi Tamgredan,

I can only asnwer some of your questions as I am only recently banded myselfbut here goes..

With regards to how long it takes going private, it all depends on who you go with. I had my first consultation on 12th December, and i could have had the op couple days before xmas, but with it being xmas i needed longer to raise the cash,so i had the op on 17th Jan. I am with SurgiCare/THG.

With regards to the hour after eating/drinking thing, that is the biggest challenge i am having at the moment, especially when out for dinner or out for drinks so hopefully some one more experienced will come along to help both if us with that!

in terms of eating slowly, I used to bolt my food, but as soon as i could even start on liquids again, something in you automatically switches and you no longer feel the need to do it. I've become very concious of the fact my band is there, and have had a blocked pain once before from eating the wrong thing so am careful not to experience that again!!

The one thing your band will teach you is to eat regularly so you shouldn't get to the point where you're so hungry you're shaking hun

In terms of being sick - i haven't been sick once with it since leaving the hospital, but everyone is different

I hope some of this helps, and good luck with your phone call :)

I used too do this and being a super fast eater as well which is something u cannot tolerate having a gastric band, my advise would be is simple, dont wait until ur starving before you eat brekkie/lunch and dinner. I get up in the morning and have a cuppa rosie, and then half hour / hour later wether I am hungry or not I eat same for lunch and dinner cause I dont always get hungry like I used too & the shakes wasnt nice at all before being banded( wasnt a big brekkie eater before banding either) but now always have brekkie its important to get ur metabolism going in the morning, you do learn to adapt too this rather quickly.

As the meals I have now are so much smaller. If I fancy a tipple of wine before a meal I order a drink str8 away and whilst people are munching on there starters I just sip me wine - You may sometimes have to decide wether u want drink or food when ur out especially if ppl dont know if u are banded ( not a lot of ppl know I am ) but I normally skip meals with a drink, hence going out too lunch for food not booze as they are empty calories anyway - Not saying I dont ever go out for a drink I do ,but if I go out just for socialising I make sure I have something to eat right before I leave home so I dont drink on an empty tummy.

It varies from person to person, I am never sick ( have been once and I needed the loo in seconds)my friend is still sick and needs the loo asap. You will learn to adapt to eating slower, trust me I didnt think I could manage this I was always a super fast eater but you WILL adapt. If you stick too the rules and chew chew chew and take ur time , you shouldnt be sick anyway. Stick too the rules hun xx

4) Im going to pay for this private, so does anybody know how long it will be before i get my band, if i was to make my 1st phone call this Thursday?

Cannot help on this as I was Nhs patient , but I wish you all the best and dont get rushed into making a decision , its not something to be done lightly ( not saying u r like) Hope I may of said something of some use. All the best - Julie xxxxx
