chicken kabab v's chicken, salad and pitta bread

louisaL

looking to make a change!
I never have a donner kabab but much prefer a chicken kabab.
But why when I tell people I've had a chicken kabab they say oh I thought you were on a diet yet if I told them I had had a chicken salad with a pitta bread they say oh well done for having a healthy tea!

It hasn't happen this time round but has happend in the past. As the chicken is grilled on a kabab and all I have is lettuce and cucumber with it I can't see the difference just because 'kabab' is in the word?

Am I missing something. Wondering if this is my naieve thoughts on food?

As far as I can see, it's grilled lean chicken breast with salad. Assuming you aren't having the garlic sauce with it then it should be alright.

Certainly avoid the donner or chicken donner though

I have chicken shish kebab with salad but without the pitta bread ( my choice not to have the bread) no chilli or garlic sauce and its yummy and healthy :) enjoy xxx

So glad you are on my wave length I hate it when people think I've cheated in the past when I say I've had a chicken kabab so feel like I have to explain

As long as its not off the "elephant leg" its a healthy option - I'm looking forward to being allowed salad and having a chicken shish :)

Had one a week ago from a take away here in Retford. Was gorgeous and not one bit of grease to be seen.

sometimes make my own chicken tikka kebabs too using an old slimming world recepie

That sounds good - would you mind sharing the recipe hun? X

Im with ya all the way... when i was with weight watchers i would have every weekend a chicken kebab and salad and a slice of cheese... and i always lost weight... post op i guess i could have a small one again... will just cut out the cheese.. and will prob have to have the other half the next day lol xx

Rayne, I cannot understand weightwatchers. Seem to eat loads - I can have 67 points.

Did slimming world a few years ago but the instructor didn't fill you with confidence as she had done it for 15 years and looked like Marjorie Daws off Little Britain.

haha i was a weight watchers instructor for a while.. and i dont flippin understand it either... hence the fact that i had to have weight loss surgery lol.
I think the slimming clubs are great but they dont help you maintain... as theory is once you maintain your not paying them a fiver a week anymore. They dont want you to maintain, they want your money! WW sell all the chewy yummy bars etc knowing you will eat the whole packet and buy more... not exacly helpful for a lifestyle change. i got to goal after losing 4 stone then put on 2 so stood down as i then felt a bit of a fraud.. i then carried on as a helper for 4 years, and during his time i put on 6 stone!! im so not a good advert for weight watchers... i tried slimming world.. and couldnt get on with the green and red days and put on 3lb in my first week.. so i was rubbish at that too.
but chicken kebabs... give me one of them anyday... so better than a normal kebab lol xx

My OH sometimes gets a chicken kebab, and last time he cut off the end of the pitta and made me a bite sized one. It was delish and with a ski yoghurt for afters it was just the right amount. :)

Loving this thread as I love my chicken shish. I don't eat the pitta and put my own lite mayo and ketchup on.....yum yum!

Use a tub of fat free fromage frais , and 1tsp of garam masala; cumin; mint and salt.
Mix together with chicken (or turkey - just as nice) and marinade for at least ten mins.

You can either put the chicken on skewers with whatever veg you like and grill.

Sometimes I don't bother with the skewers and just grill the meat on its own.

I love a chicken kebab, I have 1 almost every friday well I eat 2 pieces of chicken and about 6 chips hubby eats the rest, theres no grease on it and I enjoy it x

The one off the Elephent leg is great for constipation though :)

The only issue with the one on the scewers is that its marinated in a high fat substance so they are not as healthy as just plane old chicken breast, but they are still one of the better things to have as a takeaway, especialy if you don't eat the pitter bread.

Me too.

But "other people" may not have ever bothered to look up the calorie difference between: (1) lamb doner kebab (very bad, high cals and fat), (2) chicken doner (medium), and (3) chicken shish and found that a lean grilled chicken shish with salad is actually quite healthy !!

Normal people (who probably *do* have a kebab from time to time but one of the greasey versions with chips) associate the word "kebab" with chips and grease.

They have not spent so much time as us looking up the fat and calorie content of various foods!

I haven't had any take aways since my op but this is a good idea when I do have one. I just cant eat and salad :(

I love chicken shish but haven't had a takeaway since my op as I'm trying to stay away from any of them. All take aways I mean. I did go out for an Indian last night and had Tandoori chicken and salad which is pretty much the same. Was lovely. I managed a small leg and thigh and brought the great big breast home which I'll have for the next few dinners. Though not tonight as going out for dinner with Tim at Wetherspoons. They have changed their menu and now do chicken and pepper kebabs with salad so that's what I'm having tonight.

ok everybody.... i ate out tonight.... wasnt intentional... i had a bit of my friends.... ready for it.... i had 2....yes 2...........

CHIP SHOP CHIPS!!!!! lol... was yummy
