For Mr Ammori who is based in manchester i was told £12,000. i got mine funded through the NHS have you tried this route??

Mine was 10.5k and i had Basil Ammori at the Alexandra Cheadle ! - not having to justify myself, not having to wait a year, not having the hell of PCT's etc and not being in an NHS hospital it was worth every penny.

thanks everyone. I am surprised that it is not much of a saving in Belguim. I was going to go there but then I received a letter for my consultant around the same time. I am now waiting for funding. I am just concerned about waiting a year or more. My health is suffering.

Shel! you are a mind of info! what would we do without you.

Lol thanks GC, but the credit belongs to Google ;)

Sarah - Your right, Belgium isn't that much cheaper, i know others went for the Europe option and seem happy, i felt i needed mine done in the UK rather than abroad ! I believe its considerably cheaper to go abroad for a band though !

And as for Shel ;) Lol

I was told if I went private then any further care required would not be covered by the NHS ?????

This is true, however i was told by the organisation i had mine through that any firther sugery to correct issues would be covered under there own insurance, therefore say i had a leakage or had surgical adhesions then they would sort it !
Part of the package i have gives me two years contact and aftercare, after two years its supposed that i wont need the after care !

Hi,

Just wanted to say that I went to Belgium and paid 9200 EUROS! Depending on the exchange rate, just over £7000. So a lot less than UK prices, and I had the best surgeon in Europe! I went for the "Belgium Option" because I live in Germany...easier to get to than UK, plus I went for the surgeon, not the cost! I wanted the man with the experience of performing over 2000 RNY's!! I went through European Obesity Care, and received excellent pre care with loads of information. But of course I did also research everything myself. You must be mad to go ahead with this and not know all there is to know about this surgery...the good and the bad!

Hi There
I went to St Richards hospital in Chichester for my bypass and opted for a part private/NHS option-all that means is that you don't have a private room you stay on the bariatric ward. Shaw Sommers did my operation. I had the initial consultation in London which was £165.00 and the surgery plus a year of follow up was £8160-so I consider I got a really good deal. Hope this is helpful

First of all, I went with weight loss surgery group and it cost 10,500 including two years after care and my own doctor has been fine with the aftercare, nhs has to provide you with b12 vit injections afterwards even if your doctor refuses to prescribe them to you, it will involve having your injections through your local hospital.

Main point I have to ask is people refering to their surgeons as the "best", is there a league table somewhere that I have not come across??
I researched my surgeon and found him a very capable knife holder that specialises in obesity surgery with excellent references.
So what makes a surgeon the best? is it the amount of ops that they have performed? or is it percentage of deaths per patients that works it out? My feelings is that because someone performs a lot of ops it dont mean that they are the best, what counts to me is a persons quality of life after the op and the care they receive!

Where would a future bypasser look to see who the best is? ( and I wont count that they are good looking and have a tv series as a reason :D!) I would love to see a countdown table of surgeons in this country, world wide even!!

Hi,

Ok wow...I have been totally misunderstood here.....

WL18 stone....I'm very pleased that you had such a great surgeon, and you got it FREE. Some of us are not in a position for certain free ops.:D I cannot get access to some services, including bariatric, hence why I paid for my surgery, or wait for god knows how long before returning to the UK and start the process of funding etc. Dont get me wrong I am well looked after health wise here, just there was no way I could get a bariatric surgery through the HM Forces system! I fully appreciate you are not to know this, but dont boast about the fact you had your surgery free, just consider yourself a very lucky person! Yeah I am jealous....but nothing I can do about it. Pay or stay obese and in pain for me!

Callyspace, we all refer to our surgeons as the "best" as they have all worked wonders for us! I actually meant to type "one" of the best by the way...I'd never heard of Mr Ammori, Or Mr Shaw before this website. I know people think they are fantastic, the same why I feel about my surgeon, who others havent heard of either! Its just an opinion. My surgeon DR Dillemans, is a leading expert in his field, (google him to find out) and has performed a huge amount of Bariatric surgeries, with only 1 death due to a chest infection, some time after the surgery. So to me, he is pretty good. No I know of no tables, just consider him good going by his results and vast experience. Just to reassure....this is my opinion, not stating that he is the only competent man in the world to perform bariatric surgery.

Anyway, I'll word it differently from now on, "my surgeon is a great guy" to avoid any competition wars, which was not my aim. I was just trying to stop pepole (obviously very badly...) from putting private patients down, and get a point across, as they consider us to receive a poor service, compared to the NHS, because for some reason people think going abroad for surgery means you have a dodgy surgeon? I've had 2 private surgeries now, both in Belgium, and had 2 very good experiences and results.

Hope that clears things up and puts a few minds at rest...All our surgeons are great!:D

I agree with you kelly, and in fact your right, everyone here raves on about there particular sugeon because thats all they know and like you pointed out people will say they were the best because the op has worked for them. Personally i can only advice others going to see the same surgeon as i had by my own experiences, and thats probably why this forum is so good !
I didn't have my surgery abroad and like yourself went private for mine.

I think to be honest if your here on the forum your the kind of person thats interested in researching your particular op and have looked into your chosen surgeon in detail, therefore your likely to know who's good and who's not, and it seems its few and far between that have bad experiences, and sadly those seem to come from NHS facilities rather than private abroad or at home !

My surgeon was one of the top 5 in the WORLD, and that was on the NHS FREE.:D

WL18 - When you say free do you mean you had your op on the NHS or someone sponsored you.

If you mean the NHS be careful, we all pay our taxes and NI and i wouldn't consider a 10k op paid for by the humble tax payer as free !
You may find yourself winding people up saying it was free ! though thats just my opinion though
