Diabetes post op

Hi all, a question for those who are post op and had diabetes before there ops..

I know i've read that the diabetes goes after the op, which is great (i am type 2 on tablets), however i remember my practice nurse who did a specialise on diabetes saying your never rid of it but can be rid of the need for it.

Anyhow, my question is this. When i have my operation if my need for my medication goes will i still be classed as 'Diabetic'? Will i still need to do the annual retinopathy tests etc???

Thanks for reading xx

Soz hun cant help ya but did not want to read and run, am sure someone will be along soon to help ya xx

Hi Julie,
I am type 2 and have been for 15 years. I have been using an increasing amount of insulin for the last 6 years or so, pre-op I was up to 170 units a day as well as 2.5 gms of Metformin a day.

Since my op I am on just 10 units of Lantus (background) insulin and .5gm of Meformin. I am hoping that will reduce in time.

It is my belief that even if all diabetes medication is stopped one is still regarded to be diabetic but in remission. If one was crazy and ate loads of sugar based foods as well as probably suffering from dumping the body would not be able to produce sufficient insulin to cope.

HTH xx

Hey Julie im pre op so cannot answer you qestion sorry hun, im type 2 diabetic to and would also love to know the answer to that question. The only thing i can say is that from what i have been told they have said that it can cure diabetes but dont know for sure:)

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and was on 500mg metformin. The day of my op all medication was stopped (which was a shock to me because I had a band rather than a bypass).
I think i'm still technically diagnosed as diabetic but I dont have to see the diabetic nurse anymore or take any medication as long as my home blood sugar test stays below 6.0. I average between 4 and 5 at the moment and I strongly believe that it is because I dont eat carbohydrates as much anymore.
I hope the op does the trick for you, as I feel so much better for not having such high blood sugars. x

My understanding is that Type 2 Diabetes can be eliminated by the sort of weight loss that a bypass or band helps to achieve as can those of us who suffer with weight induced high blood pressure - I was on three blood pressure pills a day prior to surgery - Im now only on one. I cant answer the questions about meds - sorry.

I was told that technically my type 2 diabetes (pre-op I took 2000mg metformin per day) is classed as 'Resolved' through lifestyle (eating healthy, exercising and maintaining a healthy weight), as long as I continue to have a healthy lifestyle I will remain in that category. I was told I would need to carry on with a once-a-year review of my long-term sugar levels but otherwise I would not need further care. I will however have to have extra checks while pregnant to make sure I do not develop gestational diabetes.

Nic;)

Are you pregnant????

We are going to start trying very soon so I am thinking in a positive 'when' instead of 'if', I promise to announce the happy day WHEN I do fall pregnant!

Nic:p

Well congratulations in advance and have fun trying! I personally blame Shelbell for this - either that or its something in the water - glad Im in the South LOL!

Sorry i know that i will technically be diabetic but without the need for medication (fingers crossed).

My question was do we still need the retinopathy tests etc annually......

Thanks for all the responses, even the read n runs xx

Hi, I am pre op and on an insulin pump, and it is the profound effect a bypass has on this condition which has led to me going for a bypass rather than a band. It seems it has something to do with certain chemicals which are produced post op which then cause the change in diabetes. Any more information than that seems to be still in research. My Eye consultant has said that initially I will continue with six monthly checks and then annually but they are unable to say if that will be continuous, I think it depends very much on how my eyes react to the changes. I have an appt with my diabetes consultant this in December and I will find out more if poss.

Thanks Dawn, will appreciate all information shared xxx

Well, I was hoping that my diabetes would go with losing so much weight. It hasn't though and I was most p*ssed off about this.

hi there
i was type 2 diabetic pre op and 4 weeks after op i havdnt had any diabetic medication so gp did blood test and all came back normal. He said they test again in 6 months and if still ok i will come off diabetic register and not be labeled a diabetic.
Hope this helps

x

Hi

I was type 2 and now I take no diabetic medicines at all! I monitor my sugar levels daily but these are between 6.1 and 6.7. I am due a visit to the Diabetic Clinic again in January and I hope that they will continue with annual monitoring instead of the usual 6 month visits.

Hypertension has gone too and no more tablets for that either.

From what my understanding is, I am typical of around 80% of type 2 diabetics who have the by-pass procedure.

Hope this helps and reassures.

U
