Eating out (and in!)

Hi Everyone. I am 5 months out and have lost 4 stones. I have good restriction now and am feeling at peace with things. I am wanting to get out more . (When at my top weight I didn't really want to.) What does everyone do when going to a restaurant with friends or when entertaining at home? I do not wish to tell anyone that I have had a band fitted. This is the only problem I have so any advice would be great. :)

hi i would just try to order smaller portions im a big fan of childrens portions they are way big enough for me or a starter and just say im trying to be good your friends know you have lost weight so they should not question it too much!xx

I went out with some friends to a restaurant and ordered a starter, and another starter for my mains. Just said to my friends i was on a diet, and then they just carried on as normal!

I'm not a bander so maybe it's slightly different for me, I don't know. But I tend to order regular mains, no starter/dessert, and just eat as much as I can/want to. Generally leaving half to a third of the meal. Eating out is a big part of my social life and I needed to find a way to still do this, after surgery. Sometimes I stick to soup, when I don't feel hungry much at all.

Im out tomorrow day & night with work and on the mushy stage. Not sure what im going to eat!
Im sure there will be something soft for lunch like potato salad and evening meal im going to have chicken and chew it to death before swallowing.
Portion size wont bother me as there will be too much talking for people to notice.
If there is nothing for lunch, ill just say ive got phone calls to make and sneak to my car where a slimfast in a coolbox will be waiting. ha ha ha

I tend to go for cottage pie as I can mush it up and then i can get to eat a good amount. I also try to talk a lot so that i can then say Oh look its gone cold now and leave what I dont want. I have to say most people take very little notice as they are enjoying the company. I think we can get too sensitive about it and stop going out which would be a shame. Think back to how much notice you take of what people eat. I think we can dwell on this too much and then it spoils our enjoyment of going out
Good luck

I find that I tend to order salads, baked potato, salmon or prawns now. I usually can't finish the meal nobody notices as everyone is to busy socialising. Yesterday we went to Morrisons for lunch, I had the baked pot with coronation chicken, managed the chicken but nothing else. Hope this helps x

I am eating out tomorrow night for the first time since my op - nearly 6 months post op. I feel a little nervous about it but luckily it is with the two people outside of my family who know what I have. I hope they have a salad on the menu!

Well done on your weight loss!

Im the same and no one knows about my op (apart from my daughter, my OH and the hundreds of people on here lol!).

Take your time ordering, get something you know you can manage, dont worry about not finishing it and you will be fine.

As the others have said just say you are cutting down :D

Hi, I hope you manage to find something that suits you, it's just trial and error I think. I sometimes think I'm going to start looking like a jacket with cheese and beans. I usually manage quite a bit of the cheese and beans and batter whats left of the potatoe ... flatten it a bit and wallah ... lol

Hi everyone and thanks so much for the responses. I am feeling a bit more relaxed about things now. I know I am super sensitive about people looking at what I'm eating. Asif anyone is that bothered  I have decided to jump straight in. Practice makes perfect. I have avoided social occassions for too long - feeling fat, no nice clothes, sensitivity around eating etc I always used to eat like a bird in public and stuff myself in secret! Now I eat like a bird all the time :D :D :D
Mable-not doing much exercise at the moment while in the weight loss phase- just walking the dog daily. I intend stepping the exercise up as I get nearer target. I still have 46 lbs to lose and at the moment am losing around 2lbs a week.
Cottage pie here I come :)

Yesterday went well for me. At lunch there was a buffet so i just put a piece of diced chicken, tiny piece of fish and some veggies on my HUGE plate....i just told everyone that i'd had a big breakfast.
During the evening meal i ordered sea bass and managed fine. Everyone had a 3 course meal and i did feel a little wierd when everybody was eating their starters but i just sat there and sipped my juice. Within 5 minutes someone had finished. I was also the last to put down my knife and fork even though there was loads still left on my plate. Im just glad the company paid for that £18 meal and not me!

There will always be somesort of fish on a menu, soup to start and ice cream for pudding.
