Emarassing Pre Op Problem- Not For Squeemish!!

Hi all,

First of all, I will apologise in advance for the grossness of this thread!

I am currently on day 5 of my 7 day unlimited yogurt diet, I am not having many yogurts a day but I'm drinking enough. Most people say they suffer from constipation at this stage, however I am far from it. Please bear in mind that I have taken no laxatives or anything close to it.

I was drinking my oxo drink when I felt the urge to break wind- it wasnt wind!! I rushed to the toilet to see it was bright yellow, runny and obviously really unhealthy looking. Should I be scared? Sorry for these gory details but it's quite nerve wracking as most people at this stage say they need laxitives. Am I doing something wrong? Please help!

Thanks xxx

I had exactly the same problem when I was on the milk diet. I wasn't allowed yoghurt just milk and a oxo drink a day but I never got off the toilet and it was just as you described. My stomach felt terrible too. I probably should have spoken to my team about it but I stuck with it and didn't do anything about it. I came to my own conclusion that I might have a slight lactose intolerance that I hadn't notice before because I often had an upset stomach that I thought was because of all the rubbish I ate but maybe that amount of milk my body couldn't cope with it. I've been the same since the surgery if I have milk so now I only have soy milk and only have lactose in a little bit of cheese but I had to build up to that again and started off on lacto free cheese and yoghurt. Could this be a problem for you? Did you have much dairy before the diet? you say you aren't having much yoghurt so maybe it's not the same. Another thing, that was suggested to me was it was like a detox of the rubbish leaving your body, whether that is true or not I don't know as it obviously doesn't affect everyone like that. If you are worried or it persists, be more sensible than me and give you team a ring. I'm sure they have people having all sorts of different reactions to the diet. I'm not sure why I didn't ring mine. You might be able to do a different sort of diet that doesn't give you such nasty side effects. Make sure you keep staying hydrated, get some dioralyte from the chemist if your symptoms continue as that really made me feel better. Hope you feel better soon x

Aww fantastic I think that might be the answer! It could be as I really never had much dairy in my diet before! I will contact them and see if I can switch to soya and see if that helps. I'm glad I'm not alone in this!

I'm just worried they'll cancell my op if I've had any diarrhoea xxx

I think that's why I didn't tell mine but I don't think they will for that, not as long as you aren't ill with it. You will probably find they have people experience this sort of thing more than we think. Hopefully they will have some answers for you so it won't happen again. Best of luck with it and of course your upcoming op :) x

Altho I didn't suffer ongoing when I was on the milk diet, I did have one time around day 7 when I had horrendous stomach cramps, and thought like you it was wind, and similar problems.

It did ease off again. Hope you get sorted. :)

Thanks top Kat. Yeah it's only been today but hopefully it's a one of thing :S xxx

You can get lactofree milk which has no lactose but tastes like normal milk. Soya is not so nice.

Yep deffo lactose and an intolerance to milk, thats why I cant to the milk . you pre op x

Hope you are feeling ok? Not long to go...

That is what I call a "shart" ! Terrrible things... I have that every time I have done Lighterlife - it's nothing to worry about and soon settles once you are back on more than just high protein. xx

I had one of those 'incidents' too on my pre op, as I was drinking rice milk I didn't think of lactose intolerance, but I was eating 3 yogurts a day so it might have been.
Soya milk is pretty horrible but rice milk or coconut milk (not the stuff in tins) are nice alternatives.
Good luck

As far as I know if I had lactose intolerance before i went on the milk diet it was pretty low key - the milk diet really triggered my intolerance and now I am completely lactose intolerant, milk and yoghurts hurt.

I'm the same Yve. I don't have much problem with a tiny bit of cheese but if I try and drink a class of normal milk or have yoghurt it's so painful and a quick trip to the loo. It's strange how we don't know these things about ourselves. A friend of mine recently found out the same after seeing a specialist for what she thought was ibs. She is all better now she is on the lacto free stuff. I'm lucky that I don't mind soy milk at all. Quite like it as long as it is unsweetened. I get it fortified with calcium and extra vitamins but the lacto free is nicer :)

All is back to normal now I haven't had dairy for 2 days. Few! Thought I was gonna have to cancel!

Thanks for your help everyone- I love this site and the amount of support that comes with it.
