Hello anyone who got NHS funding what did you say to your Doctor and take with you info wise?

I want to be fully armed this time lol xx

i had a fight on my hands to get a gp referal it took me a year of seeing diff gp's in my practice, tell the gp you have researched it and you see this as your last chance to turn your life around, if you get no joy see a different gp, as some gp's will refere straight away other's are anti wls.

good luck

Having osteo arthritis diabetes hypothyroidism high blood pressure and BMI of over 35 I told her honestly that I wanted to consider this to improve my health
I looked up the criteria for my area, NICE guidelines, and for my PCT and made sure I met them all
The criteria is important so check you meet the necessary needs for your area.

Love Jay xx

Thanks guys,I have been given here the criteria for my area, NICE guidelines, and for my PCT and I look like I am ok,all I know is I am a bmi 42 and I have done every diet plan going.....I havent any major health problem AS YET........

I haven't got funding yet.

My GP referred me to Bariatric consultant and he has applied for funding. I've been told that in my area funding is automatic if you have a BMI over 50 and weight related illnesses.

I've only been with my GP about 18 months, she was going to give me Xenical. I've tried it before and I told her of other diets I had unsuccessfully tried. She was happy to refer me.

I just went in and asked for a referal didnt take anything in with me and he refered me that week

I think it depends on the PCT your GP falls under. I'm with Greenwich and went along to docs after having tried various diets and slimming pills which were GP prescribed but did not help and so I suggested poss of bariatric surgery. Doc agreed I was a prime candidate and met all NICE guidelines so she applied to PCT for agreement which they gave along with a list of hospitals within London that I could be referred to, so basically my funding was in place before I was even referred to the Whittington (where I am having my op). However it would seem my PCT are only one of a few who are so supportive, it's a shame that other PCTs are not as helpful as it's such a struggle for some people and so disheartening to think about. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you though! xx

I think I am quite lucky - my GP was all for a referral, then again my notes would have span back 20 odd years cataloging all the different things i'd been and tried.

Good luck and FIGHT YOUR CORNER!! x

I'm with a group practice of seven doctors all of whom turned me down. In the end I got a letter off my osteo specialist who suggested my doctors might like to reconsider their stance and then they refered me. My advice is to just keep asking.

I struggled to get my GP to refer me, I had to spend 6 months under her care w/slimming pills etc. before she would refer me. I wish I had gone to see another GP in my practice because I have since found out that 6 people had been refered from my practice before me! It all worked out in the end though.

Good luck!

My dr suggested it to me after months of trying on reductil and numerous other diets. Also after seeing two different dietitians over a period of years. Also coupled with the fact i had been seeing the fertility dr for about 5 years after not being able to conceive down to having pcos and that dr also suggesting wls. Good luck with your dr and like others had said, just keep on asking and explain why you want/need this op. Sometimes they just don't understand your reasons and you need to be honest with them. It helps!!!

Hi, if you visit your gp often then he/she will already know the problems you're having, Just go in there and ask straight out !! Let them know how much you have research this option and that you feel this is the only thing left to do. Explain to them about the criteria and how you fit into this. Some gp's are'nt always aware as some of the peeps on here have found out so if you go in full of awareness it may also help out your gp. Good luck xxGaynorxx

My GP refered me straight away as had done xenical and reductil and god knows what else also have bmi of 40 and fibro and osteo arthritis. GP wrote to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and that was 2 months ago still have no reply. Anyone any ideas how long it takes for the initial consultation ?
