Gastric band - Alcohol

I m due for surgery on 4th feb and I have kept it to myself apart from my husband.

I have a night out on 22-03-14 and I wonder what I can drink as in alcohol. I don't want anyone becoming suspicious.

I'm not really a wine drinker.

Why not set the seeds now and say that you're having an alcohol free year as your new years resolution? That way when your provider recommends not drinking for a year you can follow it.

Give up alcohol for lent. Its a great way to lose weight anyway. My friend is doing 40 days wine free for charity :)

My provider advised no alcohol while on liquids or mushies, but after that drinking non-fizzy drinks was fine. They recommend alcohol is limited due to the empty calories contained in it and the fact it makes mindless eating more likely.
That said, I find that when I drink now there is far less food in my stomach to soak it up, so I get hammered ridiculously quickly. For that reason I don't drink with work colleagues or family, and having a band I can't drink with a meal, so my drinking is relatively rare anyway!

I would advise a sober night (ear infection requiring antibiotics has worked a treat for me!) until you can re-learn your tolerance and limits. I learned the hard way, when I was falling-down drunk after a couple of glasses of wine. Mortifying!

Like you I haven't told anyone but a few family members. I know this is probably not the best advice, but I found I was fine to have a glass of wine or two once I was back on mushy food. The band doesn't affect alcohol absorption like other gastric surgeries, although as previously pointed out it would probably be good to test your tolerances before hand since you will have less food to soak up the alcohol in your stomach!

I know this is probably controversial on here, but I'm still at the stage of life where many of my social events are alcohol related. I want to lose weight to feel confident and enjoy my life again - for me this means still being able to "be normal" and enjoy a drink with my friends now and again.

Although we all know alcohol = calories, so I have decided to give up alcohol completley for January (for cancer research's charity "dryathalon"), with the intention of reducing my drinking after that.

p.s. if it's just for one evening you could stick to orange juice & vodka or cranberry & vodka. Not the most calorie friendly drinks but better than fizzy drinks at such an early stage. Although I find I can now (with my providers permission) drink diet fizzy mixers if I need to without a problem. I find they fill you up quite quickly - which stops you drinking too much!

LOL so right alcohol is a contentious subject :sigh: Although I drink very infrequently and just a glass if I do, it goes straight to my head. I hold my hands up now though, I did lots of research about the band on the Internet, and the ONLY question I asked mr super, my surgeon, when I had my consultation was could I still drink champagne after the op  to which his answer was yes :D yippee life does still go on!

haha i might try some champagne maybe it would make me burp I haven't been able to burp since my op (unless somethings been stuck) and I kinda miss burping..

I haven't drank for a few years, my hubbys ex made our lives tough for 2 years and we both drank a lot during that time to numb the pain and get through it and decided enough was enough. I had a bailey in my coffee over xmas and was half way gone sooooooooo embarrassing!!

It's unreasonable to think we can't have a drink after having these operations.
The very mention of alcohol on here gets everyone's back up.
I think we all know its bad calories, and I do agree there's a length of time you need to refrain from drinking after having surgery.
I have a drink occasionally, usually vodka based..and it's true we need to be careful how much we drink as the effect of alcohol gets straight into the system so quick.
I get very drunk easy! And I can understand people can become addicted due to this happening.
But I will have a naughty treat at weekend or an drink, you have to live and we deserve to be like anyone else.
Just because we have had surgery doesn't mean we can't have a drink or eat a naughty thing again.
It's just all in moderation now!...and that's so liberating.

Thank you for being so understanding. x

I was quite scared to drink any alcohol after my surgery so my first outing to the local was a bit of a 'mare. Couldn't decide what to have and ended up with a watered down j20 which made me very poorly for several hours.

4 months later I can tolerate a cheeky brandy with lots of ice and even a splash of diet coke (if I stir the fizz out) so feeling better about socialising now. Still avoiding fruit juice tho as that's the only thing thats ever given me any kind of 'dump'.

I know THG advised 2 weeks post op to be able to drink alcohol.

I think I managed about 2-3 months. I now drink every weekend and thoroughly enjoy it. I am losing weight and enjoying living my life.

Alcohol always gets peoples backs up on here. We are all adult and can all make our own decisions. I drink wine normally or a vodka with orange and water. It does hit me a bit quicker due to eating less food I think. Just maybe have a practice run before your social night out at home lol (devil in me") to see you rown tolerances.

Enjoy it, after all this has to be a new way of life it's no good depriving yourself as this is why we have all failed in the past.

I do think depriving yourself of a little treat isn't good for you.
My bypass has given me control!
And I love having a little bit of what I fancy and not be miss piggy anymore, its a great feeling knowing a little bit is enough to satisfy me.

Thats it just have a little of what u fancy as a treat and not as a regular thing and we shoudnt go too far wrong
