Sooo...

Had my pre op today and to say the service was concerning was an understatement and dont know what i should do.

Got there and first thing pre op nurse said to me 'have u got any questions about gastric band - i said not really, i have done alot of reading and she said good...i dont know about gastric band procedure, we dont have many in here..that made me anxious...surely they should give me a nurse who knows about my surgery??? Has anyone else had this??

Then..blood tests... they needed 6 test tubes - but she had issues finding my vein so called in another nurse..she found 1 in my hand but the blood wasnt coming quick enough - i warned them that i sometime get faint, next minute the other nurse comes back and said the machine has said there is 15 blood (cant remember word) in ur wee sample but dont worry - she said if she done it manually she wud have ignored the 15 but as its recorded on machine it has to be sent to lab - why the hell wud she ignore it!!?????

This made me anxious and i was close to fainting during my blood test, sweating felling sick and needed to lay down.

Then...she called doctor to find a better vein, she found it but she is only allowed to do 3 tubes and another person has to do the other 3 (policy so it gets double checked) - the same nurse said ohhh can u do my 3 tubes and i will sign acting like i took the blood..

SERIOUSLY I AM SO WORRIED NOW!!! they are not following policies and dont even know about procedure - they really have broke my trust and made me scared for the op tuesday.

Am i over reacting?? I dont wont my op delayed so maybe i shouldnt complain until after op??

Advise would really be appreciated xxx o_O

Ohh I'm so sorry to hear you've had a bad experience hun!! I would ring the surgeon or specialist bariatric nurse if you are concerned to check everything is okay. Explain to them what you experienced and that it's given you a knock of confidence. I know sometimes for shortages medical teams may cut corners but it's not nice when they tell you and make you feel as though they aren't following procedure. I know when I had my bloods, 2 people definitely did mine and they were in 2 totally seperate rooms. I don't think your over reacting, this is a daunting enough process without feeling your not in the best hands. Xxxx

I don't think you are overreacting at all. That would give me serious concerns and doubts! I agree with LJ, you should call your surgeon if possible and look for some reassurance there. It isn't nice to know that they are cutting corners, but remember they aren't the ones performing your surgery. Hopefully the surgeon can make you feel at ease again!
Keep us updated and good luck x

Thanks all,

Yes such good points - the thing is I know my surgeon is good but I defo think the nurses need looking at, they have to do their job correctly to ensure surgeon has correct info before operating.

I will be writing in my experience - I just feel I have paid £6300 and would expect amazing service and be able to trust they r thorough. Spesh as I went with a more expensive company as they had good reviews :(

I will be going through with it as I am desprit for the op and to lose weight but I have let my family know etc just encase something does go wrong (I am sure it wont).

On the day of my op I will speak with my surgeon and just explain my worries but not sure if I will tell him about them breaking policies, as I doubt he would go ahead with it.

I'm sure everything is absolutely fine hun. As long as they took enough blood to test for your blood group to ensure its 100% accurate and it sounds like they took a good few bottles, they did with me too. Just try to stay positive, I know it's hard! You'll feel much better when it's all done with and your back at home recovering xx

Defos!!! I am sure pre op nerves are not helping, as so much is going through my head atm. I have been excited, emotional, needy haha (I am not a cuddly person but all I have wanted to do is cuddle my bf) hahaha, anxious bla bla blaaa...

I have had ops before but because this surgery is my choice its worse - when i broke my leg i had no choice so didnt worry hahaa...

Hope ur feeling better bbe xxxx

I do love this forum - it is so nice to talk about the op (dont want to bore my family anymore lol) plus everyone responds so quick xxxx

There should defo be a meet up event lol xx

@Nickynooo these few days are going to be the longest. Try to stay positive and calm. Pre nerves is good and I bet your bf is making the most of all those extra cuddles. As for your operation desperation can lead to bad decisions. Please be careful and make sure all the information you have is correct. Don't settle for anything sub standard. You are paying for a service so you should expect to be treated like a queen.

Not long now I hope all does go well for you keep us posted xx

The bloods thing is fine, as long as two people are there and verify all the samples are from you then it's fine. I've no idea about the blood in urine thing but if it's being checked in a lab anyway then you'll be fine.

Last minute nerves are normal. Nurses anywhere can be a bit blasé about things that are completely normal and not realise how freaked out you are because none of it is normal or routine to you. Make them explain everything to you and speak up if anyone worries you.

To be honest the care you get will be the same whether you are paying for it or on the NHS. When you pay you get operated on more quickly, get daily visits from your consultant and a private room. You also may get a better nurse to patient ratio.

Best of luck and look forward to the losers bench.
