New Member
Hello Everyone, I'm new :) Have been referred to Specialist Weight Management Service, have been waiting 3 months for my appointment, its this Wednesday.
Does anyone know the process from this starting point, have u been through it yourselves, do you have any pointers that will help me? Sorry for all the questions! Just want to be able to go for wls and want to make sure I don't do anything wrong/follow the wrong process.
I'm in the Gloucester(shire) area. I'm 26 and my BMI is 44.
Thanks, ;)

Hi, welcome. I am in Gloucestershire too, so can tell you a few things. When I was first referred, I saw the dietician and she talked to me about my expectations, and then arranged further sessions with herself and a psychologist. Later on I joined a weight management group, where we were told that we had to lose 10% of our body weight or 5% if you have any weight related health issues. Those groups will first meet weekly, then fortnightly, then monthly and then three monthly, leaving you with a wider and wider gap To see how you get on. But I'm sure the dietician will tell you everything when you see her on Wednesday. Good luck ... Maybe I'll see you there at some point, have a few after-care appointments at beacon house soon. Look out for a girl with a white cane... I'd be happy to chat as we are similar age.

Hi ines4c, thanks for your reply, that helps me get things into perspective a bit. I must admit all that feels loooong to wait! How long was it from your initial appt at beacon house, to surgery (assuming you have had surgery)?
That would be great to chat, I'll keep an eye out for you =)

I'm getting nervous about tomorrow now, just sitting in bed going over my 'fat questionnaire' as I'm calling it!
I checked my weight for the first time in months, just to prepare myself as I guess they'll weigh me tomorrow. And my bmi is actually 49.5 .. I wonder if that makes any difference regarding the process to wls.

From my first appointment to surgery, I'm sorry to disappoint, but it was about one and a half years. But it depends, doesn't always have to be that long. As for your BMI, I think it doesn't make much difference... Mine was 59 when I first went there, and I had several Health issues due to my weight, which is why I only had to lose 5% instead of the 10% otherwise needed to be lost before surgery. They will explain everything to you today, best of luck... Let me know who your appointment is with, maybe I know them. :) They are all very very nice and they do not judge you, so you don't have to be worried.
If you ever want to meet someone who already had surgery for a coffee, give me a shout... Would love to share my experience. :) Again, good luck for today.

Ok, I'm trying to prepare myself that this is unlikely to be a quick process. I'm really worried about having to try and loose 10 percent of my body weight! Its because of struggling with self control that I'm over 21stones. But I will fully commit myself, as I really am desperate. I fear what will happen if I get any bigger. Trying to keep positive, I'll post later about how I get on this afternoon. Thanks so much for your message, I'd love to meet up, I dont know how to private message, not sure I have that privilege yet =)
Here's to the beginning of my weight loss journey and hopefully some new friendships! X

The thing is that they know that it's not easy for us. They will encourage you to make small, maintainable choices. It's actually more encouraging and less worrying than you think. I found the first appointment very reassuring, as I was scared that it would be the same old same old that I had already experienced with another dietician from another hospital.

How did your appointment go on Wednesday? Haven't heard from you for a few days, so was wondering how you got on. X

So sorry! Its been on my mind to reply, kids havent been well, when I get chance to reply properly I will fill you in, but briefly, all went well, feel positive, basically process explained was same as what u described from ur own experience. Hope you are getting on ok? Hows ur loss this week? Xx

Think I am not eating enough as I have not lost anything this week, yet again. Rather frustrating, but could also be hormones. Glad you got on alright, and I hope the kids will feel better soon. Feel free to drop me a line if you have any more questions. X

I found the SWMS really helpful. We had a great friendly consultant (who was overweight herself, so she could relate!) and a fantastic dietician who really helped me make some changes!

I managed the 10% loss in just over a year!

So are you in Gloucestershire as well? I had the same experience, lost 10% in a year easily. Can I ask who you had?

If you dont mind me asking, have u had surgery yet ? Great on ur ten percent weight less btw!

Not sure if you mean me, but I had my Gastric Bypass in may.
Interesting, so greater Manchester has similar rules as Gloucestershire, we also have to spend about a year on the SWMS... Which at the beginning I didn't like, but it prepared me for surgery very well.

True ines4c, I don't like the thought of another year of being this obese. But as you and lots of others say, it seems to have been the best route to surgery, so I'm hopeful that I find it helpful and that it doesnt feel really long.
Purple owl, I'll keep my fingers crossed for u getting ur surgery asap, well done on the 10percent loss, did u find it hard? What size do u think u should be buying now? I'm currently a 26, this time last year I was a 16. Have my 2nd 'assessment' appointment next week, I've not tried to loose any weight since my first app last week, ive just carried on as normal. Anyway, sorry for rambling!

enjoyed reading your tale purple owl ,I too have lost approx. 10% of my body weight mostly by cutting out cola, cakes and snacking between meals sounds easy but once I realised I don't really need that 3rd can of coke or the 2nd bag of chrisps or that choc bar and all before my evening meal and seeing the scale at the hospital showing a weight lost I was happy.it seems to have slowed down but im not down hearted about it all I want to do is keep that weight ive lost so far off and keep my eye on my end prize
