Gosh - its so dependant on your eating habits. The bypass is permanent and with it comes the use of vitamin supplements for life, the fact that you will NEVER be able to eat a three course meal again + there will be some foods that you may never be able to tolerate (thus far I can neck most things bar red meat). Also, for the first 6-9 months, anything ultra sugary will make you violently ill, your tastebuds are higgledy piggledy for months afterwards and you have to make yourself eat for a while. On the plus side - putting the weight back on is possible but not as easy as without one and you lose most of your excess weight in the first year.
I went for a Bypass cause I had (stress had) a dreadful sweet tooth coupled with never being full, coupled with the fact that its permanent as I couldnt bear to lose and put on again.
Im not so clued up on the band but I know its a less severe op and its reversable - you can eat pretty much anything on it but in tiny amounts and the weight loss is slower but steady if you follow the rules.
Basically WLS is a tool not a magic wand and its hard work but so so worth it - surprised your surgeon didnt nudge you in either direction actually - take your time making the decision as its a lifechanging one! Good luck
Ditto Karen, I haven't been offered any yet, just referred for my 1st meeting but one day I think I will go for a band the next I wonder if a bypass will be better.
Decisions Decisions!!!!
I do think it is best to be advised by your consultant though!!
seeing your under st richards as long as advice is still the same you will be on liquids for 1 week, mushie 1 week , then start introducing normal food week 3 by week 4 you should be eating normally
I was like Caz and back on solid food by week 1. This is'nt what my surgeon told me but I was struggling with fluids and found solids chewed really well went down better.
