how much is a cup ?

i ask because i have heard people say " eat a cup of ..." or" i made a shake with a cup of "
i have cups that are 250 ml , 300 ml & 400 ml

i brought a small measuring jug from tesco which was 79p... ive just looked and a cup is about 225ml x

buy on ebay they come in all sizes 1cup 1/2cup 1/4 cup 1/8 cup around 99p well worth having as it lets you measure what your eating as i used to guess all the time and got it all wrong

I wondered too...a lot of american things give everything in cup sizes, i always find it strange as like you say, cups are all different sizes!
