I've only just started sleeping well. Even then I still don't need much sleep.

I don't feel tired or anything. My theory is that I'm not using as much energy through the day to get around now so I don't need as much sleep to recover!

If you still feel tired, perhaps see the doc. If you're not feeling tired then just bide your time :D

I hadn't thought of that. Although, I don't feel ready to get up when I wake but cannot get back to sleep, I don't feel weary though during the day... Hmmm, you have given me food for thought there! Thanks M-M!

MMMmmmm I thought it was just me having this trouble

I get up at five in the week anyway but I used to go to bed around 10 and crash out until the alarm went off. Weekends I get one chance of a lie in every other Saturday, and Pre op I used to be able to sleep until one o'clock easy.

Post op I wake up at all hours, never sleep for more than three hours and on my one lie in I struggle to stay in bed after eight

I put it down to the pain my knees give me waking up me up as pre op the meds kept the pain at bay. Now though it might be I wake up anyway and then feel the pain rather than the pain waking me.

Where's Nic with the answer to this when we need her :) xxx

Looking at her posts during the night, she was up rather late - so maybe she's catching a few ZZZZZs? Someone wake her, please!!!

It'll be interesting to see how many others are struggling with the length of sleep.

I look forward to that day when I don't feel tired all the time.

I think you could be right Mixman because you have all lost alot of weight your body is not using as much energy to get around.

I think Nic is having the same problem she was posting in the wee small hours.

It's just a couple of things that made me think this. One of them being falling asleep in the afternoon watching TV or getting tired on my night shift!

How many of you post oppers fell asleep in the afternoon before your op and now don't? Me? I used to nod in the afternoons. I could fall asleep for an hour or 2. Now, not at all. I never fall asleep!

During the night shifts I used to get to about 4 or 5 in the morning and start flagging a bit, now? No problem, I'm not saying I'm as bright as a daisy but I'm certainly nowhere near nodding! Plus it's a lot safer on the way home. I commute 40 miles, mostly motorway, and I scared myself a few times in the past where I may have nodded for a split second at the wheel. Now, it's so much better and I feel so much safer!

I don't sleep in the day time anymore, have more energy in the day time am going to bed when I'm tired normally anytime time between 11pm and 1pm am not reading for another 2-3 hours before I finally go off and get up anytime between 7am and 9am. Before the op it would have been going to bed anytime between 1 and 3 am reading for a while and then I would get daughter to school and go back to bed and sleep and then nap mid afternoon and constantly felt drained and had no energy

I'm the complete opposite. I have never slept so well in my life!

I think it might be because, at my lowest before surgery, the last thing on my mind when I was going to bed was "how do I get myself out of this mess, I look hideous". But now, after the surgery, I go to bed at night thinking about 1 years time, and how much more confidence I will have :)

Ooh GM - I have the opposite - am off to bed in a min. Am absolutely pooped all the time1 Am up at 6 for work (and to get OH sorted and the dogs) so am in bed by 7pm currently....I hope you get it sorted soon - I can only think of increasing cardio activity about an hour or so before bed?

I am similar to this. I am sleeping better than I have ever done. It is still not brilliant but I was a total insomniac prior to surgery. I am loving the extra energy I have.
For all you non - sleepers, I hope you manage to get some Zzzzzzzz's soon. No sleep is horrid.

i just dont seem to need much sleep but what i do get is much better quality. i usually go to bed about 11 and am awak at 5am get up make a coffee and sit in bed watching tv till 6.30am.
only when i have one of my little ones visiting do i go to bed earlier as she can be awake any time so if i sleep when she does i know i can then cope.

Not once since my op even in the first few days have i fallen asleep during the day. lol

Hi everyone! I missed this thread earlier and yes I suffer from 'up all night' syndrome frequently since my surgery. I have found this waking early thing on many bypass forums so it appears to be very common. With a bit of reading, it seems to be a hormone related issue, specifically the reduction of leptin & ghrelin (2 hormones that play a role in appetite & metabolism). Because your hormone production is affected by the bypassed section of your intestines, you have a chemically induced reduction of hunger/increase in metabolism along with more efficient energy expenditure. Therefore you will find shortly after surgery that you need less sleep, feel more rested and have more energy. This hormone balance is also subject to adjustment by weight loss, so as you drop more pounds the hormones are reduced again so you can have some sleepless nights until your body levels out.

Here are 2 of my sources:
ScienceDirect - Psychoneuroendocrinology : Nocturnal levels of ghrelin and leptin and sleep in chronic insomnia
The Early Effect of the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass on Hormones Involved in Body Weight Regulation and Glucose Metabolism

So, it is normal, happens to lots of us and you shouldn't need sleeping pills if you feel rested when you wake. If that is not the case, speak to your doctor.

HTH,
Nic;)

I'm sleeping less, ie I don't have afternoon naps now, but am still a night owl and hate early mornings;):D

Not sure why that happened twice - please see below! Lx
