hey amanda, theres lots of diebetics or ex diabetics sould i say lol im sure they will be along soon to help you, good luck :)

I was told by my dietician who, usefully, used to work in a diabetes specialist department, to half my insulin for the pre op diet. I did that and checked regularly as I did go very low (3.5) a couple of times so had to reduce further.

Following your op you will prolly not be needing insulin. If you do it will be very small doses.

Just make sure you test about four times a day so you can keep an eye on trends.

Hi Amanda, I was told to stop the insulin altogether but to stay on my tablet, which at the time was Piaglitazone - have since changed to Metformin. So I stopped the insulin on the day I started my milk diet & have not had any since 3 weeks later. Only on very low dose of Metformin & hoping this will also stop as soon as my body regulates itself. I assume it depends how much insulin you are on pre milk diet. Good luck with it, honey xxx

Hi Amanda, it really does differ between Consultants and Dieticians. Now I was told that I wouldnt be able to do the milk diet because of my diabetes. So I followed a low fat/low carb diet. This changed my blood sugars straight away so I reduced my fast acting insulin even before my op. Pre op I injected 5 times daily. After the op I was on an insulin sliding scale (a continuous drip) for 3 days. Then on the day of discharge the Diab Doc came to see me and suggested that I injected once at nite and checked my blood sugar 1st thing in the morning. I stopped my metformin the day before the op. My blood sugars have been well within normal range since the op 5 - 7. So far so good. Good luck

i stopped the fast acting novorapid(with my meals) and cut my slow acting (humilin) by 2/3rds 180 units down to 80 i had to experiment with my doses

As abover, I was told I couldn't do the milk diet and did the low fat/cal one instead. My meds didn't change until day of op when it was stopped altogether.

I am surprised you are on milk diet if you're on insulin, at my hospital the dietician recommends the low carb diet for diabetics. We also involve diabetes nurse specialist in patient care for pre/op diets.
Best advice I can give is check BMs before you give yourself insulin and adjust doses accordingly to try and keep within 5-7 range. Make sure you carry some hypostop/glucose tablets or whatever you normally use with you just in case.
