….Well at least the very first step. I have booked an appointment with my doctor to discuss my weight problem. I want to get a referral for WLS, but I’m not sure how to go about asking my doctor for this, does anyone have any recommendations? Do I ask for a referral to someone or just come out and say exactly what I want?

Can I ask for your opinions and stories about what happened with you and your first appointment that led to WLS?

Thank you so much,
Lisa

Hi Lisa and welcome x

My GP suggested WLS to me, rather than me requesting it.

We are now going through the applying for funding part and once that is approved he will refer me to a hospital.

I think different parts of the country have different procedures so much of what happens next will depend on where you live.

As for your actual question, sorry I can't help as I didn't ask my GP. I'm sure people will be along soon who can tell you how they went about it x

I just told my GP that I wanted to be refered for a gastric bypass and he did so there and then.
Everything depends on your PCT.
Where are you? and what PCT are you under?
Someone should be along from your area and be able to tell you more

Hi Lisa, best of luck. I decided to seek a refferral following joining my trillianth gym and beeing told how i felt, which was " a little athlete stuck in this massive shell" So off I went, was seen initially by a locum who dint even know hoe to work out my bmi let alone know what wls was, so I made another appt to see my own Gp, who smarmily told me he would write a referral if i lost 5kg. I was at a low point and knew i wasnt ready to make the effort so just forgot a bout things until 2 months late a letter of appt came from the hospital and that was it wight management clinic, dietician, observations and finally a meet with the one and only Mr Super and of course me being me had to go and get pregnant so hence postpoment of opp. P.S it was the letter of referral by the locum that did the trick for me. God bless him.

I went to see my GP in January 2009 following a horrendous holiday in Florida. The majority of the time I had no choice but to hire an electric chair to get about and just thought enough is enough!

I went to my doctors and burst into tears and begged for help. Although he was very sympathetic to my plight he asked me to try Oristat for a year and enrolled me on a fitness class for very unfit people in the same boat as me.

I did what he asked and I lost 4 stone by May, I had gained it all back plus another stone by October! Typical behaviour all through my life.

I returned to see my GP in Jan 2010 and said I had tried and failed again and could he now help with referal. He did and I got the thumbs up for funding in May.

Since then it's been a roller coaster of tests and appointments but I finally feel the end is in sight. The MDT has agreed to list me for surgery so it's just a waiting game for the date now. Hopefully before the end of summer.

Here's hoping anyway.

Good luck with your decision, I hope your GP is helpful and refers you without too much hassle. Xx

Hi . . . welcome aboard. It would be useful if you completed the side bar (about me) so other users can "see what you about" . . . you seem to be doing ever so well on the CD - do you have much to lose ? x

Ooh I will do that! I'll need to work out how to remove the CD stuff from my signature as that was about two years ago and all the weight I lost plus more has gone back on. I will need to lose over eight stone I think ( I am mortified to say that) but I have to face things and I'm willing to do anything the Doctor asks of me, I'm just so nervous, I have a real fear of doctors (not hospitals, I had a bad experience with a horrible GP once and now I suffer from white coat syndrome so I want to prepare myself as much as possible.

Thanks for all your replies x

I have my doctors appointment today and am at a loss currently at how to bring up the conversation. I am SO nervous - I'm sure I will be turned down point blank :sigh:

I just asked outright, my doc wrote the referrel whilst I was there!

Don't panic, just be calm and clear and tell him exactly want you want. Explain you've tried everything else etc etc

Let us know how u get on hun. Thinking of you xxx

I was the same as you, felt physically sick by the time I walked into the Dr's surgery but it wasn't as bad as I thought and I'd worked myself up into a lather for no reason :)

I just came out with it and told my Dr that I was struggling to lose weight (which he knew already cos he commented on it every time I saw him for anything else!!) and that I'd been reading about weight loss surgery online and was this something he could refer me for. He said he'd look into it because he didn't know much about it and 3 days later he rang me back and said he'd submitted a referral.

So think positive! Let us know how you get on.

H x

I went to see my GP in desperation, I have see her on a few occasions re my weight, and have tried many things, that did not really help. She suggested WLS. Under my PCT funding is done for you, so I have no worries there. I saw the surgeon then the Specialist Bariatric Nurse and was put on the list. The only thing is I have been told it is a 2 year wait!!
Good luck with your appointment

Thank you all! I was a bit of a wreck, but I'd covered myself for that by writing the doctor a letter with everything I wanted to say in it. He was lovely! All he can do though is refer me initially to a local weight loss service called OWLS which he mentioned means I may have to be on a course with for up to a year, but he said that is the right path for me to begin with. I've looked them up and it seems pretty good http://www.royalberkshire.nhs.uk/pdf/OWLS Leafletv3.pdf I am willing to try anything at this point as I am so unhappy so if this us the first step I need to take then so be it. What do you all think? He held my hand while I was upset bless him!

welcome to the forum Lisa :D How did you get on with the GP today?

I cant really offer any advice as i was turned down by my PCT, not fat enough or ill enough!! So i went down the private route.

Hope all works out well for you x

I went and asked. i researched my PCT criteria and Nice criteria (which i met) i told me docter i met the criteria and if he referred me and the consultant said no then okay. he referred me there and then. my op is June 7th :)

So how did it go!?
