My hospital bag list and what I really didn't need to take!

Well done fabulous weight loss!

Hello and thank you

This is a brilliant post as I have had lots of different stays in hospital from having kids to having my gall bladder out and never really get it right on what to take.

I was going to take

Big briefs
Loose PJs
Open back slippers (easy to put on and wont have to bend)
Lip Balm (lips get so dry in hospital)
Toothpaste & Toothbrush
Shampoo & Body wash (all mild types)
tunic and leggings and slip on shoes to leave (I have to catch a plane home and want to be comfy and not have to bend to put shoes on)
Hair Brush
Face Wash & moisturizer ( i get dry red skin around my nose if I don't keep my face clean and moisturised)
hand cream (my hands get very dry in hospital too)
hand wipes to clean hands and keep your face cool if it gets too hot.
Ear plugs and eye mask (cant sleep without them!!)
Phone & charger
Money/Change just in case (my Mum was in a hospital where you had to get a TV card! plus good if you want a mag or something)
I don't' want to be faffing too much so I'm not bothering with make up or hair products.
I might also take my noise reduction in ear headphones so I can listen to music.

I had my consultation on 27th October and my Op is 13th November can't believe its coming round so quickly.:eek:

I brought some mouth spray on the advise of others on here and it really came in handy as I got a dry throat and mouth and a little spray really sorted that out for me
brought them in Sainsburys for about £3

I took:
1x Long nighty/top
1 x pj bottoms
1 x comfy top to wear home (stayed in Pjs to go home)
1 x comfy joggers to wear home (stayed in Pjs to go home)
underwear
bras
book (I was waiting for several hours - couldn't concentrate)
Mobile/Charger - used headphones overnight as had an elderly lady talking to herself all night in bed next to me.
Pads - came on on morning of surgery... typical. ;)
No need for socks, took a pair just in case, but had ted stockings on.
Other than that. Didn't use much, was sent home less than 24hrs later.

Blimey, sent home less than 24hrs later! How did that feel? Its a wonder you'd come round from the anaesthetic!

lol. I was up fairly quickly. Got me out of bed two hours after surgery. I went down to theatre at 11.50am, finished by 4, into recovery, minor problems in recovery, and onto ward at 6. Left at 12 day after surgery, so 20hours later.

May I suggest headphones for the iPhone

I'm all packed!

Only extra thing I'm taking is a large towel. I will take my laptop rather than leave it in hotel storage.

2nd chance Jo you will be fine I'm the biggest tit out I had a bad time to start with but I dumped and then got a bug, but pain wise it's not that bad you will be a bit sore but nothing major. You just need to take each day as it comes accept help, go at your own pace and don't rush things. Read you instructions follow the advice and stay on here because there is so much advice through here there all great. I'm still a sort of newbie and still learning. Don't hold back if you want to cry but you will be ok . Good luck incase I miss your date :)

Aw thank you mouse57 that really means a lot :);x

I took more than I needed but OH took excess home & brought nothing else I needed. Took a towel as recommended but used hospital ones. Lip salve invaluable as was a not too difficult book, a couple of magazines & headphones

This post is so useful, I was just thinking about what things I may have forgotten to take with me. Thank you x

Hi Ali sleeve have you got a mouth spray from boots, because your mouth gets very dry, a quick spray refreshes, it's minty so your breath smells nice. Peppermint oil for the wind pains better than tea and you can make it as strong as you like, cheap on Amazon two bottles under £2:00 with free delivery. Liquid medication that you need for every day ( for what ever you have that need medication). Just a few thing to add to the rest of you long list lol

Hello mouse,

Thank you very much for those extra items, shall definitely be getting the mouth spray from boots as I've only thought about Vaseline etc so far. Currently only have deflatine (rennie) chewable tablets for the wind pains so far but shall pop onto Amazon and order some peppermint oil as I've heard good reviews from peppermint and obviously you also recommend it.

It's okay gaining information from specialised books but the advice and information from this forum is so valuable, so pleased I joined. My surgery in on 26/6/2015 and very excited.
Thank you again mouse
Ali x
