Nationwide timescale

Hi everyone just a quick enquiry as to how long it takes from go referral to your first consultation from different parts of country I'm just curious. This after the tier 3 has been completed.

I finished tier 3 last August. They did a MDT meeting and referred me. I believe they did that in late September. My first hospital appointment was 23rd January. I have completed all phase 4 now and wait for a date and to start pre op - I am in the West Midlands.

I phoned Luton and Dunstable yesterday, they told me to expect to wait 8 months from the date of completing Tier 3 and then being referred by GP.

Hi, had appointment 20 Aug end of tier 3. Seminar and dieticians Sept, psychologist and MDT Oct, surgeon 10 Nov and surgery 10 Dec. 14 months from beginning and gp referral. I'm mid Yorks x

Hi, all timescales differ greatly, in Wales even the criteria differ terribly.

I've got my first appointment with the nurse next week for the educational session so from there she's said that I'll have about 8 months of assessments. Following this I'll be listed for surgery (hopefully) so my surgery won't be until 2016 ? x

Mines is a bit convoluted.. Saw orthopaedic surgeon in March 2012 who asked me if I minded if he put my name forward for Weight intervention. In July I saw the local bariatric team who said they felt I was a good candidate to be put forward despite not meeting the criteria (I needed to be diabetic and I wasn't) I got the go ahead and my first appointment with my surgeon in RossHall in the December of 2012 ..ballooned in February 2013 and bypassed August 2013 . So about 9 months from the ball starting to roll to my initial meeting.

I finished tier 3 in November then there was a delay waiting for my gp to refer me. Had my education and one-stop assessment last week. Now waiting for further info. Apparently it takes about 6 months from being put on the waiting list to getting the op.

Hi Ellie I think it depends what area your in as my surgeon told me there is a 4 month waiting list and to expect my surgery end of July. I was put on the waiting list end of March.

It really does. I think I'm quite lucky only having 6 months to be honest.

Well I had my first appointment on Monday at Morriston hospital in Swansea and I've now been told that the surgery is going to be around 18 months away. To be honest I cried all day long as I'm sooooo desperate for this op.

There's talk of the service being moved to a different hospital. If this happens then the wait will be less as it will be under a different health board. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed xx

I really feel for you Purple. I was referred by my orthopaedic surgeon March 2012 and had my bypass in August 2013 17months later ...fair enough I had a balloon inserted 6months of the latter end but that was just an aid to get me to a much healthier BMI so they could safely operate on me but those 17months flew by!

I'm just gutted. I want my nana to see me healthy and happy but she's 86 now and you never know what's gonna happen do you.

I really hope they move it to Llandough as it's a 10 minute drive away rather than an hour. I'm just gonna have to keep my fingers crossed xx

Mine was a year from completing tier 3 to getting my operation. It should have been 7 months but there was some problems with bloods which held everything up massively.

I am so glad that it took that long though, I know easier said but mentally you can never prepare for the journey so the stronger you are the better - that was the case for me anyway x

Hi there just wanted to share my journey & timescale with you guys (hope you don't mind). I'm with aintree hospital Liverpool, I've been going there for 11 months & started off by seeing my consultant who has been fantastic, I asked straight out what happens next & he told me there and them I would have to be with them at least 12 months. I saw the dietician and psychiatrist on the same day.. I didn't have a particular target they just wanted to see any form of weight loss. I attended an education session and support group and my last appointment was July 8th 2015 I had lost 9.4kg! I have been approved for surgery and am having my pre-op on 11th of September. I'm scared, excited and nervous but I know I'm doing the right thing for me and my family. So sorry for the long post but I wanted to share my timescale with you guys xx

I had to complete a year of tier 3, which was 12 weeks of group sessions every Thursday morning and then apts with dietician and exercise people every 3 months after that! they have an mdt meeting at 9 months at which point I got a pack saying if been put forward for tier 4 and a list of hospitals, I then rang around, picked the one I wanted and got sent an appointment through. It's been 13 months so far, I'm still a bit away from surgery, but hopefully not too far! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for April/May next year! Xx

... I would say though to lose some weight whilst you're on tier 3, it will make everything easier for you! Xx

I'm working really hard at it on milk diet started 127kg 1st appointment and I'm now 121.3kg so I am giving it my all, aww was interested as looked like only 4 months from post but must be typo lol xx fingers crossed for you I just keep thinking next year it will happen for me some time xx

Hey foxy,
I was never asked to do the milk diet on my tier 3, so am anticipating that I'll have to do it soon as well as the pre op!
Tier 3 is different everywhere, there doesn't seem to be a consistent approach from reading others experiences, although it seems if you do the tier 3 in the hospital you're having the op in it seems quicker in comparison to those run independently! It's a shame there's no national guideline as to how the tiers go as it would definitely give people a better idea of what to expect! Xx
