Hello everyone,
I am new to this site and i will like to clearify some of my worries. I was diagnoised with PCOS 3years ago and since then i have been put on diet, gym , metphomin and xenical. Yet i gain more weight. I was been refered by my gp to the bariatric team and they had to send my referal back to walsall PCT. My current BMI is 41.8 and my gynacology proposed the bariatric surgery, which i was told i had a low BMI and i will need a BMI of over 50. Can someone tells me if they have had a bariatric operation with PCOS as the main ilness or sickness. Coz i am so worried and i have not heard from the walsall PCT if they have granted my funding.

Hi Pauladerm,

Welcome to the site, I cant answer your question but there will be someone along soon who will know.

Hi nice to meet you what is PCOS, i have had a gastric bypass if i can be of any help to you x

My pct reqires a bmi of 50 as well. I had a very documented struggle with pcos. I was told when they referred me they felt at my weight could not be lost without wls. However, the pct (Bexley) turned me down saying they do not classify it as a co-morbidity. I ended up having surgery privately. But, if your doctor supports you i have heard some times its in the way it's written. Good luck sweetie!

Polycystic ovarian syndrome. It has a range of symptoms weight gain being one, along with irregular periods, infertility, cystic ovaries, facial hair, etc.

Welcome to the site - I don't have PCOS but my sister does, however I have always been the fat one and her weight has always been within the healthy BMI range... I feel a wave of horror for what I am about to say from some of my fellow site friends...however if I had my time again, I would do my utmost to raise 5K and have a band fitted privately, as the waiting, funding, meetings, PCT weigh loss program, etc is so flipping long and painful; you can save yourself a lot of heart ache, time and wait gain (while waiting) for the NHS - If you're able just go private from the start, I also think what you save of food over 5 years it pays for it self too!!.
Good Luck
xx

I have PCOS had it since I was 13 am now 25! It was reasons I was able to have my bypass so I would have help to lose weight, bring back periods & help my fertility probs x x

Pcos is not counted as a comorbidity, because it is rarely caused by being obese. Obesity is a side effect of it. Also, because obesity is not an automatic side effect of it they will not count it. Can your doctor test you for things such as diabetes?

Pauladerm good luck pleased there are some people on here who are familiar with your health problems its amazing what we talk about on here, hope you find it helpful sorry wasn't anything i knew about. Take care x will be watching out for ya on here x

I was referred by my endo & gyno's to my surgeon as my weight is down to my psoc and is the only reason why I only had to wait 1 year instead of 2 I have no other medical problems however I guess all hospitals are different

Everywhere is different unfortunately for some!!
I have had PCOS since I was a teenager, my weight steadily increased since being diagnosed. However in the last 10 years it increased rapidly, which inturn brought on Type 2 Diabetes & High Blood Pressure and also depression :(
I really hope they do grant you your funding - but here in Liverpool they do not count it as a co-morbity :(
My funding was granted due to BMI, Diabetes and blood pressure x

I hope you get funding hun I have pcos too and have since I was a teen but only diagnosed 3 years ago, it has helped my case for the op but my bmi is over 50 and its over 40 to be considered round here, Xx

I have had p.c.o.s for over 20 years now and I was referred by my endocrine department for wls and it was a co morbidity when I had my surgery in 2010, I did have other co morbidities as well ,and they never actually told me if it was the main one so to speak. But if the endocrine had not had referred me I would have never got wls as other providers turned me down flat. Good luck on your journey xx

I don't know if the fact that I have PCOS is the reason I had funding for my bypass but just wanted to say that unfortunatly I have all the symptoms and had to have fertlity treatment to have both my kids.I understand anyone with the condition.By the way I diagnosed myself over 20 years ago thanks to an article I read in a woman's magazine

Thanks everyone, i very much appreciate ur help. This forum has given me so much hope and ideas on how to go about issues like this. I went to see my gynaecology and he has written a letter to the pct for them to look into my case. I hope things work out for me , coz its depressing when u cant attained the weight u want becoz of an illness or condition. I will keep u all posted as i continue my journey.
Can anybody from walsall help me to understand how wls works in our pct. I seriously need help

Walsall PCT/PCOS

thanks everybody, i am so grateful with ur words of encouragements. This forum has given me some ideas on how to go about things. i have been to my gp and my gynecology and they are willing to support me though out this journey. With PCOS i tend to gain weight as the day go by because my body is insulin resistant there fore everything is been stored as fat in my body, but i am trying to reduce my calories intake.
I do not know if anyone from walsall PCT can help me with the funding procedure to actual operation. I am so worried and i will need help from u all

Hello there

Sorry to hear your funding has been refused. Do you know what their guidelines and comorbities are for your pct???? Some of the comorbidities I had I didnt even know was under my pct guidelines, so it may be worth looking into xx

Hi

I too have got PCOS, with all the side effects. It was the only co-morbidities I had. I am with Islington and I know that they are a bit more flexible with funding-my BMI was 47 at the time. I had tried reductil (now band) and the fat trapping drug.

In my application I stress my family history of diabetis and heart problems. I think that might have helped my case more than the PCOS.

I have seen several specialist for PCOS and its symptoms, and it came down to weighloss. "Since surgery I have periods every single month, compared to 4 times a year before.

Please research as much as possible the way your pct reaches it funding decision and tweak your application likewise. Remember that you need to be explicit with your surgeon/consultant as he will be putting what you say in your application. Stress the medical reasons and your family history of any chronic disease linked to excess weight.

Hope it works for you.

Best of luck
