Been told by bariatric nurse that my funding had been cleared so wondering why I have to have a psychologist appointment. What do they ask??? Will it alter their decision to do surgery???

Yes it can do, they are checking if you are mentally fit to cope with the operation and the afterwards!! I have a friend who did not get past that appointment.

Everyone has to have a psychologist appt it's standard procedure.its just to make sure you will cope with the surgery as its life changing.also to check if you have problems that need addressing before you have surgery,so they can give you extra support or if you need support after surgery.good luck.

Seems a bit ironic really when you think most people with weight problems are low or depressed because of the weight or weight related issues, so how can you assess how they will cope with something that could potentially make them really happy!

I didn't get of of these appointments,strange..all u can be is honest in whatever they ask u,good luck I'm sure you'll be fine x

I think the psych appointment is to just check that there isn't any very obvious issues that are going to affect your success after the surgery. They are going to expect you to have some issues, I don't think many people get over weight without something going on so don't worry about being honest, that is for the best. People can be refused at this point but that still doesn't necessarily mean the end of the road. You can have counselling and be referred again but nearly everyone has to go through this bit and look how many people do get their op, most people pass this stage. Good luck :) x

I didn't have to have a psych appointment!
But as far as I know these appointments are to assess what if any support you might need after the op.
I've never heard of anyone been turned down for their op because of this.
Lots of luck.

They are looking for specific things. They know the sort of things to look for in terms of who is likely to be successful.

Try not to worry, I never had a full on app. for this but did fill in a large questionnaire, which led onto how we feel about things in life and ourselves and our bodies. It was from that questionnaire that they sent me for sleep apnoea test which was positive and now don't have it afetr losing some weight. I think the nurse discussed what I had put and I told her how i new i couldn't afford to put on any more weight, it was affecting my life and i needed help and had been asking for a long time and tried everything else possible, but that was just a routine app at SRH so not sure bout other hospitals just be open and honest about what you eat how much you eat. Good luck you'l breeze it xx

Thanks ladies you've really helped me be at ease with this. Being honest is my plan as I want this to go right. I'm need no illusions and am fully aware that m bypass is just a tool and not a miracle solution I just need some help after all these years overweight and trying and failing I can't wait to get started and ur stories have been so inspirational and motivating I'm glad that this site exists.

Had my psych appointment yesterday and although it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be I struggled to talk about my issues with good ad it's something I don't often talk about I think I held back a bit cause I didn't wanna be judged to harshly but now I'm starting to question my relationship with food in a way I never really thought about before.
