Scotland has announced a new wls hospital

Loving Being a Loser
It was announced a few days ago that the Jubilee Hospital just outside Glasgow is to become the centre to tackle Scotland's obesity problems and offer WLS. They are offering the band only presumably as there aren't many surgeons up here that do the bypass. Lets hope that this means there is going to be more funding available and more people benefit from this announcement as its long overdue xx

I'll second that! I think it's way overdue... Now if only Wales could get its arse in gear with some funding it would be near perfect xx

yeah the post code lottery aint a good thing x

which surgeons allie ?

Hi Liz
There are 3 that are Glasgow based and that is Mr David Galloway, Mr Robin Stuart and Mr Ross Carter. There is no officiall word on who will head up the team or indeed be part of it. The statistics for referrals versus actual surgery don't make good reading in Scotland so will be interesting to see if this helps and how many operations they will actually carry out and how long it will take to set up x

sounds great Allie i think it will be good and hopefully they will do bypasses at some point in the future to x

i have passed the news onto my now very excited cousin who was thinking of going to romania to have her band cos she couldnt get it done in scotland - shes at the drs laster today so fingers crossed for her

I dont understand...she was going to Romania because she couldn't get it done in Scotland?? Can she not travel down to England to get it? So many people get bands etc in foreign countries that cause endless amounts of problems and as far as I am aware she is not covered under the NHS for foreign surgery if it goes belly up!!

I have a friend in Ayr who is currently trying Xenical to shift some weight but her Dr says she can go for wls because of her health if these dont work for her .......

She'll be chuffed lol xx

my cousin was told she would have to be a resident living in england for 2 years before they would allow her to be considered for surgery and then it could take 18 months plus for the op - her dr in scotland suggested romania for the op as its only £2500 but she was put off at the thought of no aftercare - this postcode lottery is crazy

Very interesting post..there is a lot out there (on the internet) about 'medical tourists'...people who go abroad to obtain accessible and affordable health-care that they would otherwise be unable to receive as easily/quickly in the usual area they live in.

Although it is much cheaper, the disadvantages are:
aftercare can be lacking, and if you have complications, British surgeons may be reluctant to treat you because they do not know your clinical history...personally, I think I would prefer to stay UK side.....I like the idea of a long-term follow up care, that I clearly wouldn't be able to sustain on my own (hence being a fat c*w on/off for toooooo many years?)!!!!.
That said, I am sure there are some who have gone abroad and things have been fine!!!! It would be very interesting for someone to share their experience if they have been abroad for surgery?xxxx

They will hopefully recruit surgeons who do bypass surgery because it is noted that the amount of fat and sugar that is consumed in Scotland is high, and bands are mainly for high volume eaters.

wow thats some difference in money!!

I would just be petrified of something going wrong and not knowing how the NHS would deal with me but good luck to her in whatever she decides! :D

You are right Lady in London( sorry don't know your name) they have bypass next to their names but i'm waiting for some more news as to why they aren't carrying out bypasses. Not sure if it is down to money or lack of experience on the surgeons part will watch with interest x

I went to Belgium through a UK company offering 'superb aftercare'. The band was put too high and the UK nurse 'specialist' blamed everything on me. Had she listened, instead of talking about her years of experience, she would have known what had happened. It took another rescue operation and £6500 to repair the mess. I recommend staying in the UK and going direct to a surgeon rather than a company. Most of them are plastic surgery people anyway.
