seeing the consultant

Morning everyone has anybody been to walsall manor yet and if so does the consultant try and talk you out of it?

sorry Sarah, Ive not been yet as Im still waiting for my initial appointment, but I dont think its the consultant you see at your first appt. I think you see Dr Hartland but I could be wrong

There was some confusion at our appointments as they came through for Mr Khans general surgery list so some of the girls didnt know it was for wls so they were running 20 mins late and mine was the 2nd appointment lol. NO the consultant didnt try and talk me out of it. It was very much you do know that this is for wls don't you. When I said yes dr hartland proceeded to tell me about the differenttypes of surgery would be best, did I have any preference as to whether I wanted a band or bypass, so I said that everything I had researched was for a bypass and I felt that would be better for me. He was glad as BEN pct will only fund 1 wls so if I opted for a band and it didnt work they would not approve another one. (he told I was borderline for either because of my BMI). He asked if I had any questions, so I asked about mortality rates, recovery time, pre op diet(they prefer to use the milk/yoghurt one at walsall). He seemed pleased that I had researched so much before hand. Then finally he asked me if I still wanted to proceed and if so he would apply for funding and out me on the waiting list. But they only put you on the waiting list once your fundinghas been approved and the waiting time he gives you is from that date also, not from when he sees you. I was told apporx 20 weeks from dec 23rd. which will take me to round about 12th may.

:)Oh no sam r you still waiting, did u ring the hospital up?:)

yep still waiting lol

its in hand though. A lady called Lesley is dealing with it but shes off today (bloomin typical!) I do know that walsall have now received it from my docs so hoping that lesley can give me an appointment when I speak with her tomorrow

did you just ring up walsall hospital and ask if they received your refferal??

xxx

yes but only because I have been waiting for a month

I am going to wait about 4-6 weeks like i have been advised and if nothing i will chase up.

I am just so nervous...i cant stand the waiting.

ooh I know, the waiting is awful. I only phoned to chase mine up after seeing Sarah on here had her appointment within a week and I had been waiting 4 weeks.

Apparently Walsall are up to date with all of their referrals so you should hopefully hear quite quickly as long as your GP is on the ball and has sent the referral promptly. Im glad I rang to chase up though as mine had not been received at all despite being sent by doctor 4 weeks ago. so I had to arrange for GP to fax it to them. They have said they have received it now, but Lesley who issues the appointments is off today so hopefully I will hear from her tomorrow

My docotr sent it the beginning of the week...i am so nervous, i hope that you get your appointment soon...have you decided on what you want to have yet?
xx

yes I want a bypass. It will be by far the best option for me as i am a volume eater but also graze all day on chocolate, cakes etc which the bypass should prevent.

If your doctor has confirmed that he sent it at the beginning of the week then I bet you will probably hear within the next few days.

That has eased my mind a lot, thank you.

I think the best option for me is the band, as i know i will control what i eat. Also if should be healthier for my baby when i decide to have one :D

yes if you are planning to have a family in the future you must take that into consideration when making your decision. I think (im not certain though) that you can have the band loosened if you become pregnant to enable you to get enough food to feed you and the little one

just to add Rachael, I think it was Tesmaralda who was told that if your BMI is over 50 you will only get funding for bypass and not band, although we are in a different PCT to you. I just noticed that your BMI is 48.8 so be careful not to let it creep over that magic 50 number if you are sure that a band will be better for you than bypass

Yeah i ahve heard that but it is a question that i will ask, i mean i think they may ask me that anyway seeing as i dont have children already and of my age (so i have been told)

You can still have a perfectly normal healthy pregnancy with a bypass too. They just advise you to wait 12 months but I think thats the same with all wls it basically so that your body is completey healed. Dr Hartland said all that I would have to do is tell the hospital team so they could change the vitamins round and give a higher dose of folic acid.

Thank you, i really appriciate all your help. Shall you be coming to the meeting in Feb?
x
