Sleep Apnoea

Have any of you post ops previously had sleep apnoea and lost it after losing the extra weight following your bypass/banding?

Someone said they thought it would get rid of it (i don't have it, or at least i don't think so) so thought i'd ask the font's of all knowledge.

Any advice would be appreciated xxx

When i lost 3 stone with WW I didn't snore but am now back to waking the street (so Paul says)
so hopefully as the weight comes off the snoring will stop

I think sleep apnoea mainly effects people who have got neck circumference over a certain size (collar size in men) can't remember how big though

Hiya, before i had my op i used to wake myself up and everybody else with my snoring but since the op and the weight loss not a peep so for me it did get of any sleep problems i did have. Hope this helps Janey;);)

I had sleep apnoea though this was never officially diagnosed and i didn't have a C pap machine either - it was plainly obvious i suffered with apnoea as i used to fall asleep anywhere (including whilst sitting on the loo), i used to fall asleep during meetings at work, and never slept very well at night always waking up feeling like i'd been out on the town, i've been told i used to stop breathing at night which is another condition of apnoea

Thankfully its the first thing post op to improve, i now dont suffer any of the symptoms at all (which is great) and sleep like a baby :)

Losing just a few stone can ease the apnoea. Once I had lost 4 stone from 30 st to 26 st my apnoea went, and obviously has not come back. Lots of people have to lose more that I did before they get rid of it. Once gone it is fantastic not to be continually sleepy during the afternoons and constantly yawning.

Hope that helps hun xxxx

I bet you looked damn sexy with that gas mask on :D lol

I am currently waiting for a sleep study appointment to come through.

I have been told that once I get this sleep study done and had it treated I then need my Gp to re refer me back to the bariatric team.

Am I right in thinking that if I have sleep aponea I will not be able to have my op??? Any thoughts on this please

I had sleep apnea prior to weightloss, and I was diagnosed after testing, it was found that I stopped breathing in my sleep between 5/7 times a night, so I had to sleep with a full faced oxygen mask on (not nice), since my weight loss, I dont need it anymore, and I have even stopped snoring. :)

My husband used to call me darth vador and if the mask slipped a little it would make funny farting noises where the air escaped. Ha ha ha many a night I got the blame for wind when it was my mask but it was a funny sound and it used to make us laugh. Mask free now though so nothing to blame for the wind ( except the dog haha) :8855: :8855:  :D

Lol Lisa, that's just what i call Trev.... I walked in WM hospital with my husband and walked out with Darth Vader... I actually texted him from bed last night something along the lines off ''i am your father luke'' lol xx

A real passion killer lol xxx

I received my CPAP machine in December and it is fantastic, the first mask was too big for me, so I have ended up with a mask similar to the oxygen masks and I sleep like a baby now. I am very rarely up during the night for a wee and my energy levels are right up there, well for me anyway. It was the hospital that suggested that I be tested as I had to admit that I had fallen asleep at the wheel and I used to talk to my kids on my mobile to keep me awake on my way home on a night from work! I was so exhausted it was unbelievable. I do believe that the hospital needs to know for the anesthetic, but it shouldn't effect your surgery, I hope not anyway as I now have my date for my surgery! 5th March yipee!!

Oh I well I suppose I just need to wait and see.

Phatmama sorry to hog your thread here xxx

Not a problem Ellie, you will still get your op if you have apnoea you just have to take your equipment in with you i believe. Hog away girl lol x

Hi I was diagnosed with sleep apneoa in October and fitted with a cpap machine in December. I have to use it every night and my family also say I sound like Darth Vader. I was told by the sleep clinic consultant that I would need to be on treatment before they would do the op hence the cpap. I was also told I would probably wake from the op with the cpap on.

Awww thanks Julie, its all so very confusing I was told that after I had treatment (if im diagnosed with sleep aponea) then I need my GP to re refer me back to St Richards

I have been wearing my full face mask at night now for over a year. I have also been told that 'when' my surgery comes around I will have to take the whole kit and kaboddle with me. Not long ago my OH and I went away for a long weekend in one of these popular motels. I was devastated to see that they did not have a plug socket near the bed, had to end up going out to buy an extension lead which plugged in the opposite side of the room. Just worth knowing for those who wish to travel. As for going abroad with the equipment I don't have a clue yet. Sorry wandered off a bit there lol ...

My friend took hers to Florida last xmas and it was fine. You do need a letter from your consultant and have to carry it on as hand luggage. It will be x-rayed and my friend had hers checked on the way back but not on the way out....

Already my OH is feeling the difference with his machine...

Wendy i'm not feeling nuffink! We're married now there's no more hanky panky lol....

Ooops yes right! Okay its been three nights and already i see the difference, he's not a miserable git after tea Mr Funny Face has returned. I don't have to wear ear plugs to bed anymore :) this is actually a big thing to me....

It can only get better. I know he doesn't want to be on the cpap for the rest of his life and he has discussed wls with the doctor at our surgery, but not the one i saw who is wls friendly....

xxxx
