story in the sun - man putting weight on for op

I agree Chris, one side of me say... 'help him and move him forward he needs the support... and the other side of me says... being diabetic and putting yourself through the strain of over eating and making your chances worse through helping to wreck your health is crazy'...

I think the problem lies in the fact that the criteria is not doing what is required and possibly each case should be viewed individually... I understand his despair being a diabetic myself and from the sound of this article, he's still managing to work at the moment... long may it continue.

You never really know with the press... was this a cry for help... going to the papers because in his opinion the criteria has let him down... it's typical negative reporting to focus on the least positive point... i.e. eat more to gain weight rather than the reasons behind it.

Looks like the criteria is really getting stricter, all around the country and I would expect there will be more of these types of stories... from people (like me) who just cannot succeed in losing weight without the support of wls...

I can understand him because I know the diabetes will be the ruination of my health if I continue on the same path healthwise that I'm on... I'm not sure if I'd have had the courage to take it to the press though...

Love and hugs and good luck to him ultimately. xxx

I think its really sad, I hate to admit it but I would have deffinately been tempted to do the same thing if it was me.....Its not sensible but being obese makes us do some really unsafe things e.g. take slimming pills that make us poorly, get our jaws wired shut! XX

I feel for the guy and I can understand his desparation. My PCT's criteria is BMI of 35 and comorbidity - as were NICE guidelines last year - I think they've been changed now tho.

His PCT would only save money in the long term by considering his case as an exception (they acknowledge that savings would be made in this type of case) - he's been diabetic for 15 years so they've probably spent at least 10 times the cost of a bypass on him already with medications, check ups, reviews, blood tests, foot tests, eye tests! Not to mention future costs should he need treatment for infections, amputations, blindness, heart disease, strokes, cancers, homecare/nursing care, etc.

Why don't they step up and start the ball rolling and lower the BMI for their patients - rather than making a somewhat childish approach to other PCTs of "we'll do it if you do..." tsk! these people are supposed to be intelligent aren't they?!

I really feel so sorry for him, I've just read all the comments that people have put on. They are all obviously skinny **** and have never known what it is like to have a weight problem. Some people are so narrow minded, calling him a fat pig. It gets me so annoyed, it makes me wish I could put a spell on them all that they wake up tomorrow twice the weight they are now and see how they like it. Sorry for rambling but I can't stand bullies.

Id make them all gain 10 stone overnight by no fault of their own and go back to them after a year and see if their narrow minds have widened any ;) XX

He's brave to have taken it to the press... many of us have been feeling that the criteria is obscuring needy cases and there is something very wrong... Nova, I agree entirely with the potential costs to the NHS and wls does save in the long run... and likewise... those who haven't had weighty issues have zero tolerance at times... it's the first time in my life that I've felt comfortable discussing my weight... with you all on here.. I hope this man finds his way to the forum!

Love and hugs everyone xxx

It makes you sick to the stomach...

People can make such narrow minded and downright rude comments to a man they know nothing about. How the heck do they know if he exercises, or if he's on medication that makes losing weight hard....

Idiots!!!

Too right Julie, they are small minded egits!! They dont have the brain power to think further than their next pint and roll up :D XX

Poor man, he is stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea.....and as for those comments ...........Well I cant put on here wot I wanna say coz I'd get banned for life.......so u can imagine lol

As someone who had funding turned down with a bmi of 49.9 then had it approved a month later with a bmi of 50.1 I can completely understand where this guy is coming from.

i sympathise with his plight but there is no way on this earth id sell the story of me trying to put on weight so i am eligible for surgery.

What the hell does he think people are going to think? Poor you, having to eat so many bacon sarnies??? He is doing nothing to help those prejudices people already have about us - it really narks me

The fact is, WLS on the NHS is like russian roulette, and the bar is constantly being raised.

The real sadness about this is the NHS's inability to use forsight and to help those who need it before they are forced into eating themselves into their criteria :(

Need before Greed.

Some people are jsut lazy and want surgery because they can;t be bothered.

Starting out with no illness and just being greedy and eating into a size 30 but still no illness at size 30 then asking for WLS - then there is people who have started out with illnesses and gain weight due to ilneesees, but get told no because the guy next to him ate himself fat.

I'm sorry but that isn't fair and this is why PCT's are rising bars and numbers to cover their own backsides.

Kill the route, problem dies

leave the route problems remains.

In the world today 'the all ways have been skinny's' say WLS is a cheat and lazy and easy way out all we need is to get out and up our lazy backsides put down the crap food and do this that and the other, this isn't helping the stigma of WLS and what it was invented for.

Cheats make the real people fight for what they should be given.
