Surrey PCT

I am sure I read on here a while ago that Surrey PCT have changed their rules from following NICE guidlines for wls? Does anyone know what guidelines they do follow now?

Hi sorry have no idea but maybe its best if u just give them a call and speak to someone in the commissioning dept as they will be able to give you the accurate info xx

Thanks for this. I definately meet the criteria! BMI 46 plus co-morbidities...

I am waiting for a revision - and have suddenly started to panic that the PCT will say no! I have had my band removed, and my consultant has written to request funding. Surrey PCT always followed NICE, but I am sure I read somewhere that they had changed...tried to phone, but could not get to speak to anyone of significance. Maybe I will just have to wait until they make their decision about me...

Agonising...:(

I think your case might be different due to your circumstances as a revision.

For a band its BMI of over 50, with diabetes 2 and sleep apnoea but unsure if that is the same for other types of WLS.

You did read the revised CG43? As I believe that's the one in use now.

Caz has made a good point though about yours being a revision surgery...perhaps this will go in your favour....fingers crossed.

(((hugs)))

I did read CG43 still states bmi 35-40 with co-morbs and over 40 without. Which of course doesn't correlate with what Caz wrote, so thinking that I might be up against it, but hoping that as I am a revision and my band failing was not my fault that I will still qualify. Gosh what a nightmare this all is...

Just a quick question, did your band mechanically fail?

I think they will help you if that is the case.

No it didn't fail, it was placed wrongly by the hospital who did it. Mr Somers had to step in and then remove it because of the problems I was having. I have an ongoing complaint with my former hospital...

I had a look on surrey pct website and they say that they follow NICE guidelines, can I ask where you heard that it was BMI of 50+? Tried calling the PCT but didn't get very far with it.

This is just for the band, not revision to bypass. Which I presume you are having. I reckon that's another kettle of fish all together.

It was my surgeon who told me of the changes.

But, yours did fail through no fault of your own. If it had been placed right, it would have worked.

Thanks - yes I am looking at a bypass as the band did a bit too much damage to consider another band. I have just emailed the PCT to get them to clarify as I am getting more and more anxious that I might get refused funding at this stage (and after almost 6 months of deciding that I would go for the op, I think it would destroy me). I will let you know what they say...

I got an email from Surrey PCT today to say that they do follow NICE guidelines (as long as patient has tried other ways to lose weight - diet, pills, etc) that is BMI 35-40 with co-morbidities, or BMI over 40. If someone does not meet NICE criteria, then it goes on a case by case basis.

Feel a bit happier, but won't count my chickens until I get the go ahead - thought this info might help anyone else on the wls path from Surrey...
