The Different types of surgerys?

louisaL

looking to make a change!
i've heard of bypass and band and wonder which one to have or will i be told?

the bypass interests me more as i've been told the band can stretch and you can put on weight if your stomach expands. is this right?

Have you considered the other options.

With a band you need to have it tweaked till its giving sufficient restriction so you lose but not too much so you are sick.

Have you considered the pproblems that you may have with dumping with an RNY?

I don't know whether they are available where you live but there is also a sleeve gastrectomy or a Duodenal switch to consider. A sleeve can be the first half of a DS especially if one has high BMI to start with.

All the surgeries have the opportunity for the gastric bit to stretch and it's possible to get round them all with wrong food choices -

Depends on your food habits to some extent -

Its a very confusing time isn't it?

Hope you can get some advice soon

Good luck

Angela xx

I'd done a lot of research on both the band and bypass and had already set my mind on the bypass. This was due to my eating habits. Luckily for me the surgeon agreed that as I was a bulk eater with a sweet tooth that the bypas would be the best op.

You need to look into the various types of surgery so you can make an informed decision as to which op will suit you better.

The band requires a lot of will power early on if we eat too much we are sick which is bad for the pouch anyway if excessive and bypassers can stretch their pouch long term if they do not follow the correct eating guidelines.
Go by what your current eating habits are...if you graze on a lot of sweet fatty foods then a bypass is usually what is recommended , if you eat meals as usual but have huge portions a band is recommended. There's a lot of other reasons like medical conditions etc and amount of weight...I am an odd one out I think, I was huge for my height , have a sweet food addiction and ate loads....but as I was not able to get NHS funding (typical of my luck I think) I had to go for a band because that's all I could afford. Better than nothing and getting worse.
It has been not much different than being on a diet and I have to use a lot of discipline which I don't always have.
But it definately has helped when I have been sensible and eaten properly.

Oooooh how funny I decide to come here after not logging in for a while and find you! Its Zoë!

For your weight a bypass would be what they would most likely say was best for you. You'll find loads of info online and once you get an appointment will be told everything you need to know to decide. It is up to you in the long run, they cant force you to choose, but can say no if they think its unsafe.

Hi Louisa
It is a difficult time trying to decide, i didn't meet the criteria for surgery so went privately. I thought i wanted the band as the extent of a bypass terrified me, however as others have mentioned its all about your eating habits. I was the classic sweet eater who lived for her chocolate, sweets and cakes and grazed all day so a bypass was definately the best option and i have to say for me personally it has been the best choice. As Angela says there are other options that if you are offered you could consider. The best thing you can do is research, be honest about your eating habits and talking to people who have been there really helps. Good luck with your decision xx

Good luck with whichever op you decide on. Your surgeon will definitely advise you on which would work best for you but you have to be honest with him about your eating habits. I chose the band because I was too scared to go through with the bypass and even though its hard work it is working for me but at a slower loss rate than the bypassxx

thanks to everyone who has answered i'm just so sorry i havent replied sooner (work and all!)

i'm 28stone and was 31stone and its slowly creeping back up again hence my decision for the bypass.

i can honestly say i dont know a thing about this all so any help is much appreciated i.e whats the process for starters. my doc said she is going to 'look into it' and book me in for blood tests how long should i give her till i ring her?

I'd give her a week, it didnt take my dr long to find out what she needed to do. It varies on PCT in mine I had to get funding first from the NHS (which you will at your weight as we are the same). In other PCTs you will be referred to the hospital that covers your area and will go through all the meetings and appointments first and get the funding after you get the ok. x
