UNDERSTANDING FOOD LABELS

Sorry Allie, i'm as confused as you! Don't understand them at all! Hopefully someone will be along to help soon!

Soz hun cant help ya but did not want to read and run xxx

Thats all fats, but then with that you need to use your judgement. For example, avocado would be out with that rule, but the fats in avo are good ones so as long as you don't eat 4 avos a day they are fine to have.

Also, we are all different in our tolerance levels to fats. Fat doesn't affect me now at all, so I don't bother with the labels beyond the traffic lights, but some people find it affects their bowels.

I'm finally beginning to get the hang of reading food labels but can i just double check the 5g fat rule is it the saturated fat content or just the general fat content thanks peeps x

Hi Allie, im not 100% sure but I follow the Fat content and not the saturated fats per 100g, WW follow the sat fat and I use to follow that but not now, 95% of my food is homemade but I watch the fat content in mayo and sauces etc as they can be high in sugar, not sure if any of that helps x

It is a minefield you're right. My understanding is that because of the high calorific value all fats need to be watched, however for the purposes of monitoring your intake, and because saturated fat does the damage to your arteries, the 5% rule does tend to refer to saturated fat. In order to maximise weight loss it really is important to stick to low fat wherever possible. That way you are caring for your heart as well as your waistline!! x x

a shel and gail have said the full fat content and not just the saturated fat. the only time i vere from this is with cheese and nuts but i have half the quantity instead and seem to be able to cope with that occasionally.

Allie - I ALWAYS forget to take my glasses to the supermarket and rarely can read the poxy tiny labels at arms length..at over 40 I pretty much know what is naughty food and what isn't. (not that it used to stop me ha ha). Anyhow - much as I admire everyone's attention to detail and dedication to counting cals, fats, protein etc...I just can't be arsed. Having the Op has definately not change that about me ;-)
