Vegan Sleever

Over the last few weeks I have been thinking of becoming a Vegan. I barely eat meat anyway but I know that after my op protein will obviously be in high demand.

I don't like meat substitutes. How do you get your protein in?

Lentils beans, non dairy cheese/yoghurt/milk. You say you don't like meat substitutes - in all honesty I think you might struggle. There are vegan protein shakes out there tho I've hear of one called vega.

I was a vegan for 11 years, here's some top protein items:

Kale
Tempeh
Tofu
Watermelon seeds
Nut butter
Peas
Hemp (add as a powder to spinach, kale, and banana smoothie - it's a protein party!)
Soy milk/yogurt
Lentils
Quinoa
Spouted grain breads

My friend was a vegetarian when she had her sleeve op about two years ago. However around 9 months after the op she was struggling with getting enough protein. She tried introducing fish and chicken to her diet and found her health improving.

Good luck with your choices.

I'm a vegetarian (have been for 15 years), and I do worry about this if I'm able to have WLS. I think as a vegan you'd struggle, because you eliminate a lot of good proteins, but I don't think it is impossible. You just have to be creative.

I know a couple of vegetarians who are post op and cope well but they do eat some protein substitutes. You can blend soy into veg soups as it is tasteless that way. There are also vegan cheeses, soy milk etc. I think it would be possible but you would have to work hard to eat very well. It would be easier to be vegetarian or pescatarian but if you are passionate about it I'm sure you could work it out. Speak to your dietician about your options when you get one.
