Volterol Gel

Hi
I had a bypass last Saturday so I can't take my diclofenac slow release pain killers. My osteoarthritis in my hip is really bad today. I know I can't take diclefenac or voltarol orally but does anyone use the gel and is it ok to use?

I don't hon, bur sure someone will be along soon who does ... sorry you are in pain, sugar :sigh: hope it goes away soon xxx :wave_cry:

I use a stronger cream which I get from my GP. He said its fine to use as the cream just goes in the blood stream and doesn't enter the stomach unlike the pills. Maybe ring your team and double check x

Sorry but recent research proves NSAIDs in any form affect the stomach, although the risks are marginally less with non oral methods. Check with your bariatric team if you feel you need to keep taking them. Short term or occasional use is often allowed, depending on your medical history, but they sometimes increase your ppi as a preventative measure.

Shell is absolutely right and I can't believe your doctor said this  but even if they did in your case they may be prepared to take the risk but that does not mean they would for all patients. NSAIDs in all forms can cause damage to your stomach, I have been refused gels, and pads by my doctor, my surgeon, and a private specialist who all said the same thing, no way would they prescribe them post op, they said the marginal relief that exterior application would give is not worth the risk. My doctor did give me a cream that is based upon chilli extract that numbs the nerve endings in the area where the inflammation is felt. It burns a bit but really helped me with the pain. I don't remember what it was called but it was good

Excuse me before you get all high and mighty read my post correctly. I said MY doctor told me I would be fine and also said to ring her team to check !!

I find it rather puzzling and realise that we can't take oral NSAIDS due to stomach irritation BUT my surgeon prescribed Neurofen Melts as part of my pain meds on discharge from hospital..............confused? You bet! But I do have faith in him, and he has a good reputation, so I followed his instructions and had no problems. I wondered if it was because they were absorbed on the Tongue rather than in my pouch.

Anyway sorry to hear about your hip pain and hope you can soon get something that helps.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. my team are ringing back tomorrow. My pharmacist offered me a cream containing aspirin!!! He knows I'm still taking fragmin injections too!!! SO you can guess how much faith I now have in him!! Depending on what my team suggest tomorrow I may have to make an appointment to see my GP. I can't go months with this pain till my weight goes down.

i hope you get something sorted marie, the pain is horrid. i really feel for you. for my knees i use fenbid which causes heat and another one but i cant remember its name and it causes heat so it numbs the pain.

good luck with your team and your GP, take care x

Thanks Amy, Fenbid is Ibuprofen so as that is an Nsaid as well I wont be able to use that, Capsaicin is a chilli pepper extract. Probably works like deep heat. What I need is a pain killer and anti inflammatory. Thanks for looking though. xx

try capsaicin its very good. My knees dont want to work. sometimes they just dont bend its like they are frozen. It works straight away takes the pain away and also makes me very mobile.

i think everyone is different my gp and surgeon told me theres no problem at all using both creams on my knees. x

Hope you feel better tomorrow, hunni. Nothing to add to this as I am not taking any pain meds so they are not my area of expertise :wave_cry::wave_cry: xxx

My comprehension skills are fairly good thanks and I got neither high nor mighty. If you choose to read my post that way then so be it. You said your doctor told you the NSAID doesn't enter the stomach which is clearly wrong according to every other expert I have read or spoken to, as it is well documented that even topical NSAIDs can seriously damage your gut. My concern was with his statement not you, but again if you choose to read it thus well that's up to you

You have a nice day now x

i was phoned on monday by the spire team to go through everything pre op and post and they said they were sending me home with co codamol and diclofenac i don't know if it's different for duodenal switch as not many on here but i hope that right because i have rheumatoid arthiritis and need them daily :(

i take lanzoprozole already coz of a hernia, and it sayi sound not take iburofen but i do and i an fine i know this is prob not the same, why is it when u have had the operation you take them then???? xx

These drugs are associated with reduced blood clotting ability and stomach ulcers. X
